Don't Take Me Home

Finally, the gays and lesbians of West Virginia are moving a step closer toward protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation under a bill passed Friday by state senators. The bill would protect people from being fired or denied housing because of their orientation.

I cannot grasp the idea that today, in the 21st century, we are still trying to legislate equality and fairness. Seriously, when are those people who hate the the LGBT community, or the Muslims, the Jews, African Americans, Hispanics, whichever hate is all the rage, when are those people going to realize that they may one day have a turn at being the hated, instead of the hater?

Speaking in support of the legislation, Senate Judiciary Chairman Jeff Kessler asked his colleagues to remember the Biblical command to "love thy neighbor as thyself."

Remember the Bible? Separation of church and state, anyone? I say, don't remember the Bible when passing laws and creating legislation, remember this: All men are created equal....

Democratic Senator Erik Wells would like you all to know that the Senate unanimously passed "a stronger version of this bill" last session, and that this year's version exempts religious institutions.

So....churches can discriminate based on sexual orientation? How Christ-like.
And still others characterized the issue as an economic one.

The Economics of Discrimination? Didn't read it.

Democratic Senator Brooks McCabe said many corporations--including Toyota, Verizon and Dow Chemical Co.--already have policies barring discrimination based on sexual orientation, and that passage of this bill would strengthen "West Virginia's position to compete in the 21st century."
But Senate Minority Leader, Repugnant Don Caruth, says the bill is "very anti-business." His opposition "has nothing to do with my personal feelings about anybody in regards to their sexual orientation," he said.

Uh-huh. Go on.

Don Caruth said the bill would "eviscerate" the concept of at-will employment, saying that the bill's definition of sexual orientation was too broad, since it protects gays, lesbians, bisexuals and heterosexuals.

Um, Don? Those are sexual orientations. Believe it or not, heterosexuality is an orientation.
That means straight people could file lawsuits claiming they were discriminated against because they are heterosexual, Caruth said.

Um.....yeah. And that would be called fairness, although i don't know how many people are fired for being straight. It's only the homos, and other minorities, who have that honor..
Caruth also added that it's difficult to tell if someone is gay. "[H]ow am I going to know somebody's sexual orientation, unless they tell me?"

That's why you need the law fool. You don't have to tell your boss or landlord you're gay, they simply can think you're gay and evict or fire you.

Get it now, Don?

Of course, Don Caruth's ignorance isn't the only fight on our hands. The West Virginia Family Foundation has pledged to fight the House bill. Kevin McCoy, goosestepping leader of that particular hate group, feels that homosexuality is different than "immutable" characteristics such as race and gender. He goes on to say, "Not only is it sexual behavior, it's repugnant sexual behavior, and it should not be enshrined in the West Virginia Human Rights Act."

Did you hear what you just said dumbass? The Human Rights Act. You want to deny rights to certain humans in a Human Rights Act.

How is it possible that anyone with more than half a brain can follow your logic?

I lived one year at the Univ in Morgantown. I will never go back to that state, no matter how liberated they get. It was the nadir of my life. Although I had a boss at a part time job who was great to me..will never forget his kindness.
Saw this in the news the other night with lots of shots of town...I didn't recognize one landmark.

  3. You're right - it IS hard to believe we are still fighting to keep from getting fired for being gay in this country, the predominant world power.
