Architecture Wednesday: Bridge House

The Bridge House is a contemporary home designed by Peninsula Architects, located in a low key neighborhood of mostly 70’s era split level houses in Akron, Ohio. It was deigned to blend in with its surroundings yet stand out for the way the house adapts to the narrow, steeply sloped, atop a ravine with a creek running through its middle.

It’s sort of Craftsman Farmhouse meets Fallingwater.

By building over the ravine and rather than down into it, the majority of existing grades and native trees and shrubs were left  intact. And because of the ravine, you enter the house from a bridge suspended over the landscape of water and native plants. The house is comprised of two wings—one with private sleeping spaces and the other more public family gathering spaces; the wings are connected by the living room which hovers over the ravine.

I love the style, both inside and out, and the way the house jumps the ravine and creek but creates a new landscape and outdoor living spaces above and around it. It both fits into the landscape and stands out from it.
