Architecture Wednesday: Bird's Nest

This week's house, designed by Kimihiko Okada, overlooks the Inland Sea and Miyajima, in a residential area of Hiroshima. The land was developed into platforms so the house would have those views over the roof of the neighboring residence.
Lifted from the ground on tall stilts, like a bird’s nest, the home was shaped for both the views and by concerns for security--keeping it one floor off the ground--and with the eventual goal of having a ground-level shop below.
There are a series of slotted windows to let in light, and provide views, in accordance with the needs of each space; there are thinner slits in the bedroom spaces and nearly floor-to-ceiling windows in other places. And, yes, the house is small, and the spaces are narrow, but the gentle rise takes you through the space and terminates in an open deck, which sits atop its own "tail" below.
I love the fluidity of the house, but some of the spaces do feel a little small--although most Japanese homes are much smaller than their American counterparts. Still, that kitchen? Honey it needs some room. How can Carlos clean up after me in that teeny room?

I like the view but it looks like a Human Habitrail that would make IKEA jealous.

  2. This one might be a little mordern for me, unless I want to lay an egg in the courtyard!

  3. What a fun space and great use of the views. But, you're right about the kitchen. We're getting used to our tiny Spanish kitchen, which is large in comparison!

I together with my buddies were actually examining the excellent guidelines from your site while before long came up with a horrible feeling I never expressed respect to you for those strategies. My guys became absolutely happy to learn all of them and already have without a doubt been using them. Appreciation for indeed being very thoughtful and for making a decision on this kind of very good information millions of individuals are really desperate to be aware of. My honest regret for not expressing appreciation to sooner.
