Washington Says 'Yes' To Equality!

When you have a governor who was open to discussion, open to understanding, open to seeing what's right, coupled with a legislature that, while the debate may have been contentious, wants all of Washington's citizen's to be equal, it doesn't take long for marriage equality legislation to be passed.
And now that bill allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry will soon be on the desk of Governor Gregoire, who has said she will sign. I mean, after all, she asked for it to happen.
Of course, whether any marriages will actually take place is something voters will probably be deciding this fall as those folks who are anti-equality have mounted a campaign to repeal the marriage bill with a referendum this November.
But the people of Washington were once asked to deny their gay and lesbian citizens equality by voting against the Everything But Marriage Bill, AKA Referendum 71, and they chose equality. So, fingers crossed, I'm hoping they'll do the same this time.
Way to go Washington, Governor Gregoire and Ed Murray.
With the declaration by the courts this week that Prop H8 is unconstitutional and the passage of marriage equality in Washington, this is a great, great week.

  1. Rumor is she will sign on Valentine's Day.
Interestingly we never saw the petition that became Ref 71. It seemed to be a stealth effort and we still haven't seen who signed it. Despite getting all the way to the Supreme Court. The question is what effect will the very real result, this time around, that if you sign the yet to be determined anti-marriage bill, will we get to see your name this time??

  2. update - I amend that statement. They now have a downloadable and searchable BIG document online. Very quietly in that local newspaper/media did not cover it.
But the comment still stands - if you sign it this time around you will sign it in full knowledge that you will have to stand by your signature. Still thinking it will be the same stealth maneuver it was last time - in the mega churches and not out in front of the grocery store like all the others.

  6. I still don't understand how anyone can believe it's okay to vote for civil rights!

  7. I watched that debate and didn’t find it particularly civil or respectful. There were some truly awful things said by opponents of marriage equality.

Say anything, but keep it civil .......
