Take That, Huckabee

Mike Huckabee, who believes that gay men and women shouldn't be allowed to adopt children because children aren't "pets", got a bit of a smackdown when an Arkansas circuit judge struck down a state law that had previously banned unmarried couples from adopting or even serving as foster parents.

State Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, whose office defended the law, said that no decision had yet been made to appeal the ruling but homophobe Jerry Cox, director of the Family Council, which spearheaded the gay adoption ban, said his group would definitely appeal.

Holly Dickson, attorney for the Arkansas ACLU, welcomed the ruling, “We are happy, obviously, and we hope that now families who are perfectly good families will all be able to go through the screening process, and maybe this will start chipping away at the critical shortage of foster and adoptive homes that we have.”

The state had argued children are better off raised in traditional family settings, with married parents, and that the law should be upheld because it protects children from abuse and neglect.

Traditional, of course, means heterosexual. Married parents definitely means heterosexual. And they wanted this ban because we all know that straight folks never neglect, or physically, emotionally, or sexually, abuse their children.

In other words, the ban was based on utter hatred and homophobia. But now, for the time being, and Ihope permanently, discrimination in adoption and fostering children, is not the law of the land in Arkansas.

Sorry Mike.

  1. Such a shame when 'personal beliefs' collide with the law, isn't it?

  2. Like str8 people have a lock on bringing up a child in a "normal' environment. I know a lot of str8 people who don't know how to raise kids.

It's like with marriage when the say they want to uphold the sanctity of marriage. Yet they allow str8 couples who are drunk to participate in a 55 hour marriage but two men who are in love can't marry. total bs!

Hopefully that wrong will be overturned soon too
