Change For California? There Is Hope

Mayor Gavin Newsom formally announced his candidacy for California governor yesterday, using YouTube, Twitter and Facebook to make the announcement. Newsom is advocating the same kinds of change that helped Barack Obama win the White House, and asks: “[I]s change an affectation of the personality of Barack Obama and is it exclusive to Washington, D.C. and the occupant of the White House? Or is that change, that generational mind-set, going to take shape across the rest of the nation, starting with the most populous state?”

I think change is coming to California, whether or not it's at the hands of Gavin Newsom. But in his hands, at least the gay community will have a friend in the governor's office; Newsom is not one of those word-mincing politicians who skirt the issue of gay marriage equality with phrases like civil union and voter rights and state rights. Newsom is vocally up front that all people deserve equal rights and protections under the law, across the state and across the nation, and has proven time again through word and deed that he will fight for the rights of the LGBT community everywhere he can.

Gavin Newsom. Jared Polis. Christine Todd Whitman. David Patterson. These are the names to remember when it comes to equality for all Americans regardless of sexual orientation.
