Architecture Wednesday: Life's A [sustainable] Beach [house] In Oregon

This is the Cannon Beach Residence, designed by Nathan Good Architect, and designed with sustainability in mind. Located on the Oregon Coast, this house actually provides more energy than it consumes. This is all made possible by a 5kWh rooftop photovoltaic system, 12-inch-thick concrete walls, solar-thermal tubes that provide hot water, and a ground-source heat pump that warms and cools the air.
All well and good, to be sure, but, man, it sure is purty to look at, right?
The house is L-shaped and its staircase is wrapped around Sitka spruce that’s 38 inches in diameter. Its construction of recycled materials seem to assure that the house will be home to multiple generations.
And, again, it's purty.
It perfectly blends into the forested hillside thanks to its sedum-sprouting green roof. One side of the house has views of Haystack Rock while the other has views of the beach.

  4. It's probably going to sound silly, but my favorite part of the house is the planted roof, with sedum as the plant of choice.
