First They Came For Our Wedding Cakes ....

Candice Lowe was on her honeymoon with her new wife, Amanda, when she received the text message from Take The Cake bakery in Toledo, Ohio.

They were canceling her order for a cake; well, sure a wedding cake for a same-sex couple? It’s been done, and done to death. But Candice and Amanda were already married.

This was a birthday cake.
"After [the owner of Take The Cake] saw my Facebook page, she found out that I was in a same-sex marriage and she could not do my cake [but] it wasn't a wedding cake, it was just a birthday cake. A birthday cake has nothing to do with your sexual preference." — Candice Lowe
So Candice and Amanda took their story to Facebook where they received overwhelming support, especially in the LGBT community. One of those people was Nick Komives, the executive director of Equality Toledo:
"A story like this makes me pretty angry inside because I know it could happen to me at any time, as well. We don't necessarily hear about it happening in our own backyard and it does make me a little bit upset. We've been working really hard to show that Toledo is welcoming to LGBT people."
I joked at the beginning about understanding the bakery’s refusal to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex marriage because we’ve been listening for years to those religious wingnuts and conservative politicians pushing for laws that would legalize discrimination …

That still tastes bad in my mouth … legalize discrimination …

… because they feel like baking a cake, making a dress, snapping a picture, playing a song, for a same-sex wedding means that they are participating in the ceremony. But now it’s not just our weddings; it’s our existence. We don’t have the right to celebrate being born because we’re gay?

And bakeries are gonna start doing background checks and Facebook stalking before they get out the flour and the eggs, the icing.

You can buy a gun almost anywhere in this country, even in Toledo, Ohio, but if you want a birthday cake, and you happen to be one of The Gays, you might have to get a box of Betty Crocker and do it yourself because Take The Cake won’t bake for The Gays.

  2. Do these people not realize they are shooting themselves in the foot? How long can they stay in business if they start picking and choosing who they'll bake for? (I'm sure their church isn't going to support them when they go out of business!)

  4. The Bible clearly states that women who lay with other women shall not have birthdays. Read your Old Testament, people!

  5. That's not religious discrimination, that's just bitter, angry, hateful discrimination because of the Supreme Court decision. You do know they thought God was on their side and they'd win... and He wasn't... and they lost.

  6. The phony "deeply held religious beliefs" or some variation of it always gets me angry. On whose word do we take the truth of that statement. If they break every other rule in the book (bible) but have deeply held belief that LGBT persons are sinners and abominations that alone allows them to refuse services? I have a deeply held belief and conviction that the GOP platform is an abomination and that people who hate are not christians at all. Too bad I don't own a bake shop.

  7. Take The Cake can take all their cakes and shove them where the sun doesn't shine.

  8. These people tend to pick and choose what they like from the Old Testament - they never quote from the New! That female who had her 15 minutes of fame refusing to marry gays....what was her name? She should have been stoned to death for her adultery, but hey she didn't choose that bit of the bible to follow...the 'good lord' didn't say don't fuck someone other than your husband....so she did, several times!
