A Post ... An Update ... And A Minute Rant ... All In One Fell Swoop

Dent County, Missouri is home to about 16,000 people. Small; almost as small as Camden, where I live, though it’s much more backwards and backwoods and asshatted than my town.

Why, you ask … or maybe you didn’t but I’ll tell you anyway? The county commission of Dent County voted unanimously on Monday to observe a year of “mourning” over the Supreme Court’s decision to allow marriage equality nationwide by lowering all the flags at the county Courthouse and Judicial Building to below half-staff.

They are that upset about equality in Dent County.

The vote came after Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles filed a letter in  protest of “the U.S. high court’s stamp of approval of what God speaks of as an abomination” and saying he wanted the flag lowered so “all who see these flags at this lowered position be reminded of this despicable Supreme Court travesty.”

All? Or maybe just the bigots and homophobes and people who don’t believe in equality and think that Bob and Carlos being married is an abomination.

And joining Skiles in the unanimous vote were his fellow commissioners Gary Larson and Dennis Purcell.

Seriously? A year of mourning over marriage equality?

Okay … maybe not.

See, those three Republican commissioners have now decided … today, Tuesday, a day after they vowed to mourn the abomination that is equality … to rescind that vote, but not out of respect for LGBT Americans, not out of an awareness that all Americans should be equally under the law, but out of respect for veterans.

Yeah, that excuse makes just about as much sense as their original reasoning for lowering the flag.

How is it that anywhere in America, when a subset of the population fights for, and achieves, the right to be equal under the law, that results in an entire county going into mourning for a year? Did the Dent County commissioners go into mourning when women got the vote? Did their wear black armbands after the Civil Rights Act was signed? Or, is it just The Gays that don’t deserve equality?

And then to back off their order out of respect for s when they don’t even bother to say how their original ruling was a disservice to veterans.

Silly, stupid Republicans … again

  3. I could imagine that these folks were as upset over the end of Jim Crow laws, Loving vs Virgina, suffrage, etc. When you're a narrow minded group about one thing, ya know very well and good they are narrow minded about everything.

  5. Where did God speak of LGBT people as being an abomination? All we have is the word of a crowd of desert dwellers who, or may not, have been high on something when they 'writ' the bible. Who knows what God thinks? (S)He hasn't told us much recently; does (S)He approve of mobiles, the internet, Facebook......we don't know and most of u don't care; equality for all is what I say.
