Minute Rant: South Carolina Will Keep Discriminating Against The Gays

South Carolina; where it’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity.

See, I can be legally gay-married — God, I hate that term, because marriage isn’t gay it’s just married … but I digress — but I can also be fired for being gay; denied housing for being gay; and just plain suffer discrimination for being gay.

And there was a slight … slight … hope that would change when a bill, sponsored by House Minority Leader, and Democrat of course, Todd Rutherford, would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in South Carolina.

In the state you cannot discriminate against people based on race, religion, or gender, in hiring, housing, and services, but being gay still means you can get a door slammed in your face, or a pink slip at your job and you have no recourse.

And now  the South Carolina House voted along strict party lines — meaning Republicans are fine with discrimination, while Democrats are not — to send Rutherford's bill back to the House Judiciary Committee where it is assumed it will "likely die."
"The fact that every single House Republican voted to kill a simple anti-discrimination bill… is downright shameful. Do they think it should be legal to fire someone for being gay? Do they think it should be lawful in our state for a hotel to refuse service to a same-sex couple who is legally married?” — Representative Todd Rutherford
It is ironic, that  a gay couple can walk into any courthouse and be legally married in a state where they can also be legally fired.

But that’s South Carolina.

  1. The GOP really are behind the times. I hope out hope that the Democrats will get a clue and use those vile planks against them. But I hold out no hope, they dont seem to know how to run good candidates and a hard hitting, tho truthful campaign.
