Odds and Ends

Here are just a few stories I found floating through the interwebz this week ...

Inoke Tonga, a volleyball coach from Valor Christian High School in Colorado, says the school administration told him to convert to being straight and “denounce being gay” or lose his job. Tonga, who is gay and Christian, was called into a meeting with school administrators last month, thinking that he was up for a promotion, until he was asked this:

“Did you ever post anything about identifying as a gay man or advocating for the LGBT community?”

Tonga happily said ‘Yes,’ because he wanted to stand up for gay people, but that didn’t make the administrators happy.

“Well how do you think that reflects on the school? You’re a danger to put in front of the kids.”

That meeting went on for about an hour and a half and Tonga says that he didn’t advocate more for himself because he thought he was there for a promotion, not a public shaming. As he was leaving, an administrator offered him some “kind of conversion books” and said:

“When you are ready to accept our help—we’re not holding this coaching position over your head, but when you’re ready to denounce being gay and accept our help to become a child of God, then you can have your position back.”

Tonga refused and, the next day the administration emailed the volleyball players and their parents saying he had chosen to leave because he’s “struggling with a spiritual battle.”

No, he was told to leave his job because he’s gay.

After nearly a decade in the NFL, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley saw his fame skyrocket in recent months, though not because he’s such a talented player—of that I have no idea and don’t care—but because of his anti-vaxxing stance.

And then this week, as the Buffalo Bills hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cole Beasley dropped a pass in the first quarter, and Twitter was ready with jeers and heckles to mock the receiver.

It would seem that Cole cannot catch the virus and he cannot catch a football. COVIDIOT.

That bigot who is credited as the architect of Texas’ abortion ban, and would like to see Roe v Wade overturned, Jonathan Mitchell, says the Supreme Court’s inaction on that Texas law has opened the door for other “lawless” rights and protections to be reversed … as in the right to have gay sex and the right to same-sex marriage.

Mitchell says that while it was not necessary for the high court to immediately overrule the legal cases that enshrine those rights—Lawrence v Texas, which outlawed criminal sanctions against people who engaged in gay sex, and Obergefell v Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage—those cases are just “as lawless as Roe.”

And to be fair, this is an absurd interpretation, but it’s all in Mitchell’s brief, as is the case of Loving v Virginia, which ended racial discrimination in marriage.

Keep in mind that one of the justices who gladly jumped on Mitchell’s antiwomen, anti-choice, anti-abortion law is one Clarence Thomas, a black man married to a white woman.

I wonder how Thomas will feel if and when Mitchell comes for his marriage?

Recently Grady Knox, a  Tennessee high school student , was advocating for a mask mandate in schools during the public comment section at a Rutherford County Board of Education meeting and spoke about his grandmother who died of COVID-19 last year:

“This time last year, my grandmother, who was a former teacher at the Rutherford County school system died of COVID because someone wasn’t wearing a mask.”

And as he continued to speak, several adults …adults … behind him began to laugh and shake their heads; at one point, someone in the background can be heard screaming, “shut up!”

The heckling continued until Coy Young, the school board chairman stepped in:

“Hey guys, we’re here to act professional.”

Adults, laughing at the story of a woman dying of COVID.

Another ‘Karen’ bites the dust, y’all. In a recent viral video a woman dubbed “Coughing Karen” followed, and coughed, on a masked mother and daughter in a Lincoln, Nebraska Super Saver grocery store because … COVIDIOT.

And then, within a matter of days, social media did its thing and the woman was identified as Janene Hoskovec, an employee of SAP, a software company based in Germany.

And within hours, SAP posted a response on Twitter, writing that the company was “taking the matter of an SAP employee incident very seriously” and that an investigation was underway. That same day, SAP announced that Janene Hoskovec, AKA “Coughing Karen” was terminated from their employ.

Bye Karen.

How does Clarence Thomas feel? He was appointed as a token who opposed all civil rights legislation. Specifically to replace Marshall. Yeah, fuck him.

@Anon
Yes.

Clarence Thomas is clearly an Oreo cookie; no doubt he'd bleach himself if he could. His wife sounds as though she is a termagant of the first order - perhaps he has to whitewash before going to bed each night to save "dirtying" the sheets?

As for the bigots and the even more bigoted detailed here, they really ought to hide their heads in shame, but we know them for the unpleasant (understatement of the year) crowd they are.

That Tonga story is just so sad. WTF????? And I'm so glad Coughing Karen got terminated. But do they seriously think that won't be the outcome, what with everything being plastered all over social media within 10 minutes? Again WTF???

There is so much hatred in Jonathan Mitchell he should be sent to Russia where he might be happy.

Beasley? His 15 minutes of fame are now up.

I hope Tonga sues Valor for every dime he can get.

Of course they laughed at Grady, that's what their lord and savior trump would do.

I really don't understand the "coughing Karens." I mean, what do they think they're accomplishing? Unfortunately, because she was fired, she and the others like her, will see her as the victim instead of the bully she is. Such small mindedness.

@Helen
I’d love to see Clarence come down on same-sex marriage and then see his comments on interracial marriage, since both were targeted by the haters with the same religious rhetoric.

@Maddie
I find myself constantly saying, about stories like these, “And that’s why I don’t like people.”

@Marcia
Thanks for stopping by!
And I’m totally with you about the little c’s.

@TDM
Go on, act the fool in public and when your boss sees it and fires you, then play the victim. I, and a great many others, do not buy it.
Bye Karens.

@Mitchell
I was thinking of a word that rhymed with schmucks.

@Treaders
It’s amazing, because good teachers and coaches are hard to come by, that a school would use his orientation as a weapon.
I giggle at people who act like fools in public these days, with everyone having a phone in their hands, who then get fired for their behavior.
Plus, is this how people believe they should act? No, ma’am, no.

@Dave
I was mostly stunned that the school claimed Tonga left for personal reasons, because stop being gay or you’re fired is not that.

@Sadie
They’re trying to prove that you can’t catch COVID.
You can, though, catch the bus to the unemployment office for being such an ignorant twit.

For Mr. Tonga...I would have let them say they piece...Confirm what I heard...And I would get up and walk out...Please don't gaslight me....Please don't be passive-aggressive with me when you know the answers to your questions...Get to the point so we can save everyone's time...Reminds me of when I was in the Air Force and they called me in from the field, I was teaching a class and asked me if I knew it was against the Military Code of Justice to be gay in the Air Force...What did they expect me to say...Yes, I am the biggest queer on this base...I played dumb and say yes I do know...What I wanted to say is What about it...The gays in the military had a general rule...Unless you have pictures leave us the hell alone...The case was dropped a few months later...I had to threatened legal action...They were trying to make my life a living hell...Not on my watch...

Working for religulous schools is never good. Especially for LGBTQ+ people. I'm surprised he lasted that long.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Religionists will come for gay marriage. Everybody said that Roe VS. Wade was the law of the land, right??
I love it when the Karens bite the dust. Well deserved.

XOXO

@Victor
I think tat's what Tonga did, though he took his story to the media to make it clear he did not leave voluntarily, but was fired, proving that christian ... little c .... school to be lying.

@Six
All Karens and holier than thou holy rollers need to be taken down a eg.

Glad coughing Karen got hers.

Very sad for that poor boy at the school board meeting. Those things are just awful places lately.

Jonathan Mitchell... you have to wonder what happened to him as a child to have turned out to be such a giant prick... and not the fun kind. He must have a micro peen.

Cole Beasley is an azzhat. Tired of azzhats being celebrated. That's why I despise social media. On the wrong side of everything.

I hope Inoke Tonga gets many many offers from lawyers offering their service pro bono. That school needs to be taught a lesson.

I would say thanks for the feed, but it's all upsetting, isn't it? So many villains and not enough heroes.

"Convert" to being Straight! OMG, that reminds me of when we lived in Pretentious Subdivision Hell and my Gay Grandson was told by the Fundie Mother of a Friend of his that his Grandparents {us who Raised him} should be "Praying the Gay away...", he has a Wicked Sense of Humor and tho' only 15 at the time he pretended to be startled and said, "Oh, so THAT'S how it works!?" and walked Home to amuse me with what the Neighbor just told him. I was actually Mad and didn't find it funny that an ignorant Adult would say something like that to a Child! Of coarse, this is the same Mom that forbid her 15 Year Old Son to be the Grandson's Friend anymore lest he "Turn" him Gay! *Bwahahahaha*
