I had to read this one a couple of times to make sure I got it right …
Down there to Florida, a Republican … Republican … lawmaker earned praise from both sides of the aisle after cutting off a witness who likened LGBT people to pedophiles.
The incident occurred during a meeting of the Florida House Appropriations Committee when Greg Pound, left, who is well known at the Florida Capitol for his extremist right-wing views and conspiracy theories, testified on the topic of ‘saving families’, saying:
“Just a real quick question on the alphabet there. The L is for lesbians, the G is for gay, B is for Bisexual, T [is for] Transgender, Q is queer, and then P would be pedophile. Now let me ask you this: Where do these people get their children? Where are they getting these—”
And that was when Republican … Republican … Representative Travis Cummings, chairman of the committee, intervened:
Cummings: “Mr. Pound, your testimony has ended here on this item today.”
Pound: “On what grounds?”
Cummings: “On what grounds? What’s coming out of your mouth. It’s offensive.”
Pound: “The LGBT is not offensive? It’s not morally offensive to you?”
Cummings then directed the committee’s sergeant-at-arms to remove Pound from the podium, prompting applause from the gallery.
Bravo, sir, for what you said and for what you did, and for doing so as a Republican, in an age when most … most … members of your party would stay silent.
