Did Our Fight For Marriage Equality Result In Legalizing Polygamy?
Well, the wingnuts were right after all.
Remember when the fight for marriage equality began and all
those folks — like Frothy Mix Santorum and Mike Huckleberry Hound — came out
swinging that if we were to allow The Gays to get married it would open the
floodgates for people to have multiple spouses — polygamy — and people to marry
their children, their dogs or houses or books or lamps?
It’s happened.
Last Friday a federal
judge overturned much
of Utah’s law banning polygamy, proving Santorum was right that —
What? The overturning of the law has nothing to do with marriage
equality? In fact, it really has nothing to do with marriage at all? Sister Wives say what?
Yes, Sister Wives; the Utah case involved a suit filed by
Kody Brown and his “wives” — Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn — all featured on
the TLC “documentary” Sister Wives. Brown’s argument was
that Utah’s anti-polygamy laws infringed upon his Mormon religious practice — his
religious freedom — and the privacy of him and his wives.
Well, District Court Judge Clark Waddoups — a George W. Bush
appointee … so all y’all wingnuts can save your Thanks Obama for another time — agreed, though the decision still says
it is illegal in Utah to be legally
married to more than one person at the same time.
So, what exactly was overturned?
The polygamy laws
in Utah go far beyond limiting an individual to only one marriage license, the
statute also prohibits “cohabitation,” referring to any situation in which a
married person “purports to marry another person or cohabits with another
person.”
See, even though Kody Brown only is legally married to just
one of his wives — he has had “spiritual” commitment ceremonies with the others — the fact that he has a living arrangement that
includes other individuals he refers to as wives — deemed “religious
cohabitation” in the Mormon context of multiple marriages — was a violation of
the law.
So, you see, Kody Brown is not going to be able to marry
anyone else unless he divorces the one wife to whom he is legally wed.
And though conservatives may try to continue demonizing The
Gays by claiming polygamy is part of the slippery slope of same-sex marriage,
polygamy is actually the result of the very same “religious liberty” that people like
Santorum and Huckabee claim marriage equality infringes upon.
The Gays and their fight for equality did not bring on the legalization
of polygamy, or bigamy, or incest, or marrying an inanimate object … though
Karen Santorum might be hard-pressed to prove she hasn’t done that.
Just sayin’.

Every Child Needs A Mother and Father
![]() |
Sarah and Jonathan Adleta |
So, the latest news out of Russia is the push to stop gay
couples, or even gay singles, from being parents; no adoptions, ever! And,
there seems to be a threat that if a gay couple, or a gay single, has a child,
that the government might try to remove that child from the home. This all
feeds off that old anti-gay chestnut that conservatives, Republicans, religious
zealots, and rightwingsnuts like to spin, that ‘ever child needs a mother and a father.’
I wonder how those folks would feel about Jonathan and Sarah
Adleta.
A former Marine, one of Jonathan Adleta’s dreams was to have
a daughter, and when he did he would have sex with her. Yes, he longed for that
day, and when his girlfriend, Sarah, became pregnant with a daughter, he said
he would only marry her if she allowed him to have sex with his child. And she
said okay. Later, when the Adleta’s had a son, Sarah was expected to have sex
with him.
Every child needs a mother and a father.
In court, Sarah Adleta testified that when she began dating
Jonathan in 2008, he would tell her stories of fathers and daughters having
sex, and when she became pregnant he told her they would marry only if she allowed
him to do the same.
Sarah said she felt uncomfortable with the idea and hoped Jonathan
would lose interest, but went through with the wedding and the child abuse anyway,
because, she said, she loved him and needed the financial security he provided.
So, basically, for a roof over her head, she let her husband
sexually abuse her child.
In 2009, Sarah Adleta became pregnant with their son, and
the couple married the next year. Adleta was deployed to Afghanistan soon
after, but when he returned, the family moved
to California, where he was stationed, and it was there that he told his wife,
again, that he would be having a sexual relationship with their daughter.
And he did; and she did, too.
But I guess not even child molesters are safe from divorce
and in 2011, Jonathan and Sarah Adleta split up; she moved back to Central
Florida, though she continued to let her ex-husband have a sexually inappropriate
relationship with their daughter over the internet.
But, that wasn’t enough for Jonathan, and in 2012, he found
himself another girlfriend, another mother who allowed him to have sex with her
daughter. That girlfriend — Samantha Bryant — whom he met online, testified in
court that she watched Adleta have sex with her child, and even took pictures
of the abuse.
Bryant — who has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her own
child, and allowing Adleta to do the same — also testified that Adleta asked
her to write fantasies about him having sex with his daughter and her daughter,
and she did; in fact, she took it a step further, and, she says, at his request,
she also began sexually molesting her own child.
Then, last December, Samantha and her two children spent
Christmas — a nice family holiday — in Oklahoma with Jonathan and Sarah Adleta
and their two children. Sarah Adleta said that, while there, her former husband
sexually abused their daughter in his bedroom and called her in to watch.
"She seemed very resistant."—Sarah Adleta, speaking about watching her child being raped by her father
And she testified that the girl seemed "really
upset" and "frightened" but she didn’t try to stop it; she stood
and watched.
After the family Christmas, Sarah and the children returned
to Florida, but then Jonathan suggested she find another man to sexually molest
their daughter so the girl would become comfortable with the sex acts, and then
maybe she wouldn’t be so frightened and upset when she was being raped by her father
and other men.
Sarah found Aaron Dixon — a North Carolina man who was later
arrested on child-sex charges
in an unrelated case — and part of their internet ‘dating’ routine was to have
Aaron watch her, via Skype, while she had sex with her own children.
Sarah Adleta has pleaded guilty in May to two charges of
sexual exploitation of a minor — her son — and faces up to 30 years in federal
prison; Jonathan Adleta was found guilty of two child-sex charges and faces ten
years to life in prison.
Like I said, there are many people who say every child needs a mother and a father, and
there are some who think that the Adleta’s are better qualified to be parents
that a loving gay couple. And I know that not all straight parents are like this,
that people like the Adletas, Samantha Bryant, and Aaron Dixon, are not the norm,
but hearing stories like these, on the heels of hearing people say that a gay
couple cannot adequately love, nurture and parent a child, infuriates me.

Pregnant As A Result Of Rape And Had An Abortion? You Could Go To Prison For That In New Mexico
![]() |
Cathrynn Brown: The Face of Crazy |
Earlier today, we talked about the Sate of Crazy, aka
Arizona, but now we’ll turn our attention to their neighbor, Friend In Crazy,
aka New Mexico.
A Republican lawmaker, and woman, state Representative
Cathrynn Brown, introduced a new bill last week that would legally require victims
of rape to carry their pregnancies to term in order to use the fetus as
evidence for a sexual assault trial.
Yes. You get raped, and wind up pregnant, you must have the
baby because it’ll be Exhibit A in the trial of your rapist….if he’s caught.
Brown’s House Bill 206 would
charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for
"tampering with evidence."
The bill says, plainly:
“Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime."
A woman who is raped, and has an abortion, would face up to
three years in prison for terminating the pregnancy. Way to make the victim the
criminal, Cathrynn.
Of course, since the Democrats have a majority in both
chambers of New Mexico's state legislature, the bill has very little chance of
surviving, but, still, it points out the lengths to which the GOP will go to
control what a woman does with her own body.
Now, Cathrynn Brown, after the story broke and people everywhere
began asking what kind of crazy fuckmonkey would propose such legislation,
backtracks a bit, now saying the goal of the bill is to punish the person who
commits incest or rape and then procures or facilitates an abortion to destroy
the evidence of the crime.
Except, the bill, in Brown’s own language, plainly states “tampering
with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion.”
Now, it make also state that it also means someone who
coerces another person into having an abortion, but it’s clear she also meant
the victim of rape is a criminal if she terminates the pregnancy.
New Mexico? If you’re listening, maybe you ought to rethink
re-electing Ms. Brown. She clearly belongs in the Arizona state House.

The Height Of GOP Stupidity, Part Four: The GOP Platform Calls For Constitutional Ban On Abortion
Well, well, well, in the wake of the Todd Akin mess-which
includes the Paul Ryan mess--on abortion, and a woman's right to choose, comes
word that the 2012 Republican
Party platform includes support for a constitutional ban on abortion without
specifying exclusions in the cases of rape or incest.
Yes, rape, illegitimate, forcible rape.
According
to CNN, the GOP platform
states:
"Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."
That's the GOP, less concerned with the economy, but very
concerned with the choices women should be allowed to make for their own health
and well-being.
The height of stupidity.
And here are some more GOP lies and stupidity regarding women
and the fact that many in the GOP think they need to be controlled and told
what to do:
- Earlier this year, a New Hampshire lawmaker came up with a new reason the government should not require health insurance companies to provide contraception. Representative Jeanine Nadler, a Republican of course, said, "As a man, would it interest you to know that Dr. Brownstein just published an article that links the pill to prostate cancer?"
- Also in 2012, the New Hampshire House in 2012 passed a bill to require doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure can cause breast cancer.
- GOP mouthpiece drug addict, and blowhard, Rush Limbaugh showed he has no understanding of how birth control pills work when he attacked Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown law student barred from testifying as a Democratic witness at a congressional hearing about the Obama administration's contraception policy. He called her a “slut” for needing birth control: "She wants to be paid to have sex. SDhe’s having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."
- And that bastion of intellectual depravity, Rick “Frothy Mix” Santorum also weighed in on the subject. Warning about the “dangers” of contraception.
- Terri Proud, a Republican state legislator in Arizona sent an email to her constituents saying she wanted women who were considering abortion to be forced to watch the procedure first: "Personally I'd like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a 'surgical procedure.
- Just before Idaho's Senate passed a mandatory ultrasound bill in March, the bill’s Republican sponsor, Senator Chuck Winder, made some inane comments about abortion and rape: "Rape and incest was used as a reason to oppose this. I would hope that when a woman goes in to a physician with a rape issue, that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage or was it truly caused by a rape. I assume that's part of the counseling that goes on."
- Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum made prenatal testing a campaign issue when he said the tests are designed to "cull the ranks of the disabled in our society" by encouraging abortions: "Amniocentesis does, in fact, result more often than not in this country in abortions. That is a fact.” Well, not so much; more than 90% of amniocenteses tests result in normal diagnoses, and half of fetuses diagnosed with severe abnormalities—some 5% of those tested—result in abortions being performed.
- When GOP asshat Rick Perry was running for president, he was blasted by his fellow Repugnants for signing an executive order mandating the HPV vaccine for young girls, and misinformation quickly spread.
- Batshit crazy Republican, and blatant liar, Michele Bachmann insinuated that the HPV vaccine causes mental retardation.
- The debate over the Obama administration's contraception policy yielded some puzzling claims about birth control and Plan B. House Speaker, and Republican crybaby, John Boehner urged his colleagues to reverse Obama's mandate for health insurance coverage of "abortion-inducing drugs." And, yet again, Michele Bachmann weighed in, calling Plan B an abortion pill when she lied about Obama making the drug available over-the-counter: "The president can put abortion pills for girls 8 years of age, 11 years of age, on the bubblegum aisle." In fact, contraceptives, emergency or not, prevent pregnancy. They don't cause abortions.
- The Arizona Senate passed a bill in March to protect doctors from "wrongful birth" lawsuits—effectivley allowing them to withhold information that may lead a patient to get an abortion. Kansas lawmakers have considered similar legislation.
So, you think the GOP has the best interests of women in
mind, or are they, mostly men, and a few batshit crazy women, trying to control
what woman can, and cannot do, regarding their own health and their own
bodies?

Those Wacky Catholic Priests
Well, as in most cases, there's good news and there's bad news.
The good news? At least the Reverend Michael Manning wasn't raping children.
The bad news? Manning has confirmed to the San Bernardino Sun that he and Nancy Kotowski had been having an affair. The newspaper allegedly had possession of letters that indicated Manning ended the affair some two years ago.
So much for that pesky vow of celibacy.
Still, I guess, in this case, there is badder news.
Baddest news?
Worse news!
Manning has taken a leave of absence from the ministry, saying, "The reality is I was living two lives: one as a priest who was vowed to celibacy and another life as a sexually active man in our sexual intimacy...The burden of deception in hotels, and with the community with whom I work and live has become overwhelming."
Kotowski. the Monterrey County Superintendent of Schools, says she and Manning once considered getting married, but, in the end, the Reverend opted to end the relationship so as to not continue violating his priesthood and sinning.
Apparently, however, the two are still an item, as Kotowski admitted that they are now celibate, in support of Manning's vocation. "It's a struggle, but we know God is calling to us, so we honor that."
I guess when they first started schtupping one another, God called, but they were busy sneaking into hotels under assumed names.
Good Catholics. Good.

Just a Thought: Indiana Congressman Thinks Women Lie About Rape

Women will also be told that there are couples "willing and waiting" to adopt children and that those couples might pay for prenatal care and childbirth. And abortions would be illegal after 20 weeks, except to preserve the life of the woman.
But, before the law was passed, it's sponsor, GOP asshat Representative Eric Turner, objected to what he called a proposed "loophole" in the law, whereby in the cases of rape and incest, the victims of those crimes could proceed with terminating their pregnancy. In fact, Turner went so far as to say that women will fake having been raped in order to get free abortions:
"I just want you to think about this, in my view, giant loophole that could be created where someone who could--now I want to be careful, I don't want to disparage in any way someone who has gone through the experience of a rape or incest--but someone who is desirous of an abortion could simply say that they've been raped or there's incest."
Yes, Eric Turner thinks all women are so cavalier about abortion that they will blatantly lie about being raped, or being the victim of incest, in order to get an abortion.
This sent one of his colleagues, Congresswoman Linda Lawson--who was a sex crimes investigator for the Indiana police for six years--into a rage: "Women don’t make this up! My Goodness! This is the state of Indiana!"
Now, women in Indiana do not have the right to decide what to do with their own bodies. The Legislature has decided that Indiana women will have to pay high out-of-pocket costs for abortions, even if the procedure is necessary to save their life or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.
How have we come to the point where a politician can call half the people, half the voters, in his state, liars? How is it that we've come to the point where women, all women, will stand by and let men dictate what they can and cannot do in terms of their own bodies?
Women are not so cavalier about abortion that they simply schedule it as part of their day. They don't squeeze it in between shoe shopping and Cosmos with the girls. I have known women who've chosen abortion, for their own personal reasons, and not one of them came to the decision lightly, or without careful thought. And not one of them ever felt the need to lie about their reasons for choosing to end a pregnancy. And not one of them, after the procedure, went out to celebrate.
How is it that politicians don't see this? Mainly because it's male politicians, who seek to control their women, all their women, of their state.
Once again, I'll say it: if the situation were reversed, and men were the ones who got pregnant, we wouldn't be having this discussion, because men would never let anyone, even a wingnut like Eric Turner, tell them what they can do with their own bodies.

Not Exactly California Dreamin'

Mackenzie Phillips on NOprah. What a mess; a train wreck, from which I could not look away. Drugs. Sex. Rock'n'roll. Incest. it was all a bit too much. Apparently, under the influence of drugs, a lot of drugs, Mackenzie Phillips and her father, John Phillips, began a ten-year consensual sexual relationship.
Ick. I'll get that out of the way early on.
The "relationship" ended when Mackenzie became pregnant and didn't know if the father was her boyfriend or her father.
Now, I don't use drugs. Never have. So I can only imagine what mass quantities of heroin and coke and, well, god knows what else, will do to you, and allow you to have done to you.
Is Mackenzie lying about the incest to make some coin on a book? Only she knows.
And that goes for the incest as well. Only she knows.
A couple of her father's ex-wives have come forward to speak up for John Phillips, who passed away a few years back. They stand up for him by calling him a drug addict and a degenerate, but state quite firmly that he never had sex with his daughter.
How do they know? This isn't something you speak about over dinner. it isn't "Pass the peas and, oh, by the way, I'm schtupping my daughter." It isn't like that at all.
So the ex-wives should keep quiet and speak only to what they know.
I'm not saying Mackenzie Phillips is telling the truth, or even that she's lying to sell a couple of books. I'm saying the only people who know whether or not this happened are Mackenzie Phillips and her father.
Sadly, he isn't here to dispute anything.
