Architecture Wednesday: Maison à Colombages

This home, Maison à Colombages, is from the 19th-century home, and is located in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, just outside of Paris.

As part of the refurbishment, walls on the first floor were removed to connect the living room, the dining room and the kitchen; the entry was also reworked to provide extra storage and a small powder room for guests.

On the second floor the designers kept the existing alcoves, and restored them to their former glory, while giving the bedrooms a contemporary vibe. In the master bedroom, a small alcove next to the tub was converted into a shower, both lined with marble.  

This is the kind of renovation that honors what once existed, while updating the home to fit into the lives we lead today ...

... except for the exterior, which keeps the Old World charm of an enchanted cottage. For me, it’s the sense of history, with the beams and the woodwork, with a modern twist of a cool gray and white color palette, that makes this house sing.
