The Funny Papers ... But First RIP Chadwick Boseman

Chadwick Boseman died over the weekend, following a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was an amazing actor—Marshall, Get On Up, 42 and, of course, The Black Panther, among many others—many of which he filmed while he was ill.

A smart, compassionate, talented, beautiful man, taken too soon.

Joy Behar, taking on billionaire coffee  maker Howard Schultz over his vanity presidential bid and _____’s government shutdown:

“You talk about the Democrats not wanting to negotiate. They cannot negotiate with a toddler. You give him the cookie one day, the next day he wants another cookie, so it’s not equal on both sides. They had to play tough, the Democrats, with him, otherwise he will run amok. Now your entry into the race pretty much guarantees a Republican is going to win.”

And when Schultz said …  “No one wants to see him fired more than me” … Behar replied … “No one wants to see you run more than him.”

Adam Schiff, Democratic Congressman, wondering if Junior is next up on the indictment sweepstakes:

“I’d like the special counsel to have access to Don Jr.’s testimony and determine whether it is evidence of—of false statements. I think—and I greatly appreciate the seriousness with which the special counsel takes lying to Congress—so I’ll let Bob Mueller be the judge of that. But one of the first acts, if not the first act, of our committee will be to send all of these transcripts of all the witnesses to Bob Mueller so that he can consider whether additional perjury charges are warranted.”

And if Junior gets convicted, do you think Daddy will save him, or will Daddy still be trying to save his own ass?–

Alyssa Milano, refusing to apologize for calling MAGA hats the new KKK hood:

“The red MAGA hat is the new white hood, [and]  without white boys being able to empathize with other people, humanity will continue to destroy itself. Some things in that video cannot be disputed—no matter what angle or how extended the cut is—these boys, who attend a religious school, were there on a school trip protesting against a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. Several of these boys were wearing red MAGA hats, a hat that has become synonymous with white nationalism and racism. Several were doing a ‘tomahawk chop.’ Several were laughing.”

Hatred. Hat red. Red Hat.

Greg Razer, Missouri Democratic Representative, on trying to get LGBTQ anti-discrimination protections into Missouri law for years and trying a new tack: an amendment to ban sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination against House staff members:

 “One would think an amendment in 2019 that simply says we won’t fire staff members because they’re LGBT wouldn’t be difficult to pass [but] the majority of my colleagues voted to retain the right to fire Missourians who work for them simply because they are LGBT like me. That in and of itself is proof that our employees need this protection. When a House member cites his religious liberty as a reason for retaining the right to fire someone, that is proof that our employees need this protection. When a House member has been supported on Twitter by the Westboro Baptist Church, that is proof that our employees need this protection. And when House Republican leaders ensure that the majority of their caucus will vote no to this amendment, that is proof that our employees need this protection.”

Needless to say, not one single Republican in Missouri voted yes, while every single Democrat did.

Sad to say, the Legislature in Missouri is GOP-controlled, for now.

Roger Stone, following his arrest, saying  he would discuss cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller, if asked:

“You know, that’s a question I would have to—I have to determine after my attorneys have some discussion. If there’s wrongdoing by other people in the campaign that I know about, which I know of none, but if there is I would certainly testify honestly. I’d also testify honestly about any other matter, including any communications with the president. It’s true that we spoke on the phone, but those communications are political in nature, they’re benign, and there is—there is certainly no conspiracy with Russia. The president’s right, there is no Russia collusion.”

I’m still laughing at this cartoon criminal saying he would testify ‘honestly’.

Mick Mulvaney, on Fox News, saying _____ won the Shutdown Battle after caving to Pelosi:

“Why he did what he did was because many Democrats had come to us, some of them privately, many of them spoke out publicly, that they are actually starting to agree with him on the necessity for a barrier on the southern border, and they had come to us and said, ‘Look, we agree with you, you’re winning the battle on the importance of a barrier on the southern border, but we simply cannot work with you while the government is closed.'”

Give us a name, Mick. One frigging name.

And … crickets.

Sam Elliott, on what he thinks about getting an Oscar nomination—his first—at seventy-four:

 “I think the thing off the top of my head might be, ‘It’s about f*cking time.’” Beyond that, it’s really about the work; it’s just about the creative process. It’s great to be recognized for that, that’s really all it’s about.”

Chadwick Boseman, accepting the award for Best Cast for Black Panther, at the SAG Awards, on what it means “to be young, gifted and black” but not have privilege:

“That is one of my favorite songs, one of my favorite sayings in poetry. It speaks to the fact that you have the same dreams as other people. You have equal if not more talent. But you don’t have the same opportunities. You don’t necessarily have the same doors open to you, the same nepotism, the same money or resources that can be put toward your dreams. You, a lot of times, don’t have family members that have ever achieved the things that you want to do. So when you aspire to do something [it] is outside the realm of what the world would see you doing and also what your family has ever achieved. Some people they’re the first person to graduate from college still [in their family]. To be young, gifted and black is all of that. It’s to have everything but not be able to grasp it, but to be able to persevere through that. All of us are actors. It is difficult to do that for everyone, it’s a difficult task, but our task historically has not been the same because we’ve been relegated to playing the sidekick or the sideshow or backstage.”
