It took just two hours of deliberations for the jury to find Carlton Champion Jr., a former football player at Texas College, guilty of murdering a transgender woman, Ty Underwood.
Throughout the trial, the state claimed text messages showed that Underwood and Champion — who were in a relationship — planned to meet the night she was killed; they state argued that the location of the scheduled meeting wasn't far from where Underwood's body was discovered.
On the other hand, the defense said that while the couple was planning to meet, there was nothing to prove Champion actually met Underwood that night. But, the defense did not call one single witness in the trial.
Carlton Champion could face life in prison.
And apparently, he has no remorse for the crime, because after the verdict was read, and he was being handcuffed by officers, Carlton Champion shouted to the courtroom:
"I'll be back on the street."
Hopefully that won’t happen for many years to come.

UPDATE: Carlton Champion Jr. has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
