Absolut vodka is marketing their product without a label on the bottle.
Absolut Peppar.
Absolut Mandarin.
Absolut No Label.
Why, you ask? Well, I'm here to tell you.
It's because Absolut believes it's what's on the inside that counts. In an advertising move aimed at homophobia, and a website to match [see HERE] they hope to challenge the labels and prejudices and stereotypes the LGBT face every day. From the site:
"Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people are grouped together because of their sexuality. But it seems as though what is really defining for most of the people in this group is their gender. Male competition is a common problem in gay men’s relationships, emotional embeddedness among lesbians. When it comes to bisexual men and women it’s tempting to say they are even less defined by their sexuality, since they’re able to oscillate back and forth between the mainstream and the so called fringe.
Transgendered men and women are a whole different ball game, and display an amazing array of variety when it comes to sexual and gender identity. I even remember reading about a woman who started out as a lesbian, then realised she was a he, had gender reassignment and came out as a gay man. That’s a journey for sure!
In any case, we shouldn’t be too quick to judge people and decide for them what they are. As long as they’re happy, who cares how they solve the complex issues of gender and sexuality?
Biology or not, everyone has to grapple with these questions – even straight men and women – and the only thing we can do is find out what works for us, and what we should change.
