Architecture Wednesday: Hupomone Ranch

How peaceful.

Hupomone Ranch is an original 160-acre homestead located in the Chileno Valley, a few miles outside the quaint town of Petaluma in Northern California.

The ranch hasn’t been used in three decades, but the new owners wanted to build a barn house that would reflect their commitment to sustainable farming and draw on the natural beauty of the site.

The simple, yet firmly grounded, form of the barn is sited to compliment the farmland and to capture the long views to the Pacific Coast range beyond.

The entry is set into the north side, tucked under the loft above, and frames a view through the house to the pool and meadow beyond. The light-filled living area opens up to the long view south with the bedrooms and kitchen to either side. The kitchen has slide away windows that open directly to the garden.

The house is certified LEED Platinum — very energy efficient, and very green — with a number of energy saving features such as passive heating and cooling with thermal mass and insulation, Geothermal, radiant cooling and heating along with solar and photovoltaic panels.

It’s peaceful and good for the Earth at the same time.
