Last week. When Georgia’s GQP Governor Brian Kemp signed the state’s new restrictive voting bill into law the photo of the signing quickly went viral.
Why? Well, a law that most people feel will inhibit voting by People of Color was signed by a white man, surrounded by white men, celebrating the signing, in front of a painting of a notorious slave plantation in Wilkes County. The painting titled Brickhouse Road depicts the Callaway Plantation, once a 3,000-acre plantation that owned up to 100 slaves. Their master was so cruel he built a quasi-jail on the property for unruly slaves, and set dogs onto those who tried to escape. That’s how Brian Kemp and his white supporters celebrated Jim Crow 2.0. And while a gaggle of white men cheered about voter suppression, a lone black woman was arrested for trying to enter the room Oh, and let’s not forget that while Kemp was signing the legislation, Georgia state troopers were arrested Park Cannon, an out Black female Democrat state representative, because she was knocking at the door. Let that sink in … a group of white men gathered in front of a painting of a plantation to celebrate passing a law that makes it harder for low-income people, and People of Color, to vote, while an out Black woman was knocking at the door asking to come inside. They don’t even try to hide their racism any longer. |
This was one of the things I talked about with EVERYBODY this weekend.
ReplyDeleteBlatant racism. Jim Crow lives in the South.
XOXO
@Six
ReplyDeleteThe image of those white men, laughing and smiling at their racism while a Black woman bangs out the door, sickens me.
major league baseball is trying to remove the all star game from atlanta to somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteothers are calling for a boycott of the masters golf tournament in augusta.
meanwhile, coke and delta and homo depot remain silent (and complicit).
FUCK RACISM!
Disgraceful and appalling on every level imaginable.
ReplyDeleteThey all have to go. Every single racist privileged white a-hole. Glad it's out in the open and we know who to fight. Glad they are so stupid to be so upfront about it. Condemn them. Stacy Abrams has her work cut out for her now. She needs to run against Kemp and beat his racist azz. This? Is not America.
ReplyDeleteThese Repugnant people are beyond my ken; I guess I'm not one of those who cannot live without the power to make other people feel worthless.
ReplyDeleteLife is so depressing at the moment. I understand this is only the beginning of states to follow suit. I only hope Biden can get a handle on this. Otherwise I dare say, if we lose election of the three branches, we Democrats any never take back them again.
ReplyDeleteBob, it's difficult to keep my thoughts civil after this insightful post on the dishonor the state of Georgia has now brought on itself through its voter suppression legislation compounded by the image of the signing in the governor's office. And the coverage of the black woman being thrown out for knocking on a door...their cup runneth over with hatred.
ReplyDeleteI say no to forgiveness for their sins. Even during Easter week.
@AM
ReplyDeleteWell, Coke and Homo Depot and Delta should be very careful, because a boycott might be in their future.
@Debra
2021!!!! I can't believe these people are cheering this in 2021!
@uptonking
Georgia needs Stacey. Again. And again.
@Helen
I don't understand their joy at making it harder for people to vote.
@Agnes
I fear you may be right, unless and until Blues step up.
Glad to see you, also. So, so sorry to hear of your loss. You have been in our thoughts
xoxo
@Sheila
I have been trying and failing not to blow a gasket over this hideousness.
How in the world NAYONE can believe that making it harder for people to vote is a good thing is beyond me!
Yep, they grabbed the national headlines for all of the wrong reasons. Some judge is going to overturn this law and the Supreme Court isn't going to touch his / her decision. And you can bet all those other racists states are going to try and follow.

ReplyDeletexoxo :-)
It appalling! There a bunch of sore crying babies who didn't get there way fairly, so now this is Georgia's punishment's. How that for a big fuck you for going to vote? Hopefully all those asshole will get voted out. I can't believe after all these years were still having issues with skin color and still can not embrace diversity. I have no hope this US will come back and have given up. If we haven't learned a lesson yet we never will. Its to the point where one party wants everything. And that is not a democracy.
ReplyDelete@ Anne Marie- "meanwhile, coke and delta and homo depot remain silent (and complicit)." What would you expect from , I'm guessing, all white conservative assholes?
This is heartbreaking, infuriating, embarrassing, shameful, and a whole lot of other things. Georgia's on my mind but not because of an old sweet song. This is a sin!
ReplyDelete@Dave
ReplyDeleteI need to see this, and all the others, overturned.
@TDM
Seriously.
@MM
Right? It's 20-effing-21 and this is how people act????
@Mitchell
It's all of those things!
The sight of that obese snout nosed porker with a badge putting his hands on Ms Cannon just absolutely turns my stomach. I’m hoping these moronic incidents result in even more people voting the repugs out.
ReplyDeletethey always win; I fear they always will.
ReplyDeleteBlatant Racism has had a resurgence with that last vile Administration being so blatant about it's Racist Leader spewing his Hatred and bias so openly, proudly and obnoxiously. Now, apparently, the Closeted Racists are falling out of their Closets in droves... we always knew they were likely there in hiding, since they tend to Vote in people like themselves and so the Political representations of certain areas kind of was a Clue to what was behind it. Still, it is shocking how many exist... apparently we haven't come far enough to progress as a Nation and be inclusive of all Human Beings and behave like a civilized Society instead of some backwards Tribal throwback to of warring with whoever isn't of your 'Tribe' and making those not exactly like you the perceived Enemy... it's tragic and disheartening. Because they're getting a foothold which if not quashed will become a stronghold and Rights will be constantly violated then, like before Civil Rights victories were so hard won. It worries me... this vast polarization of America.
