Architecture Wednesday: Chameleon Villa

This house, the Chameleon Villa, is located in the area of Buwit, a coastal area in southwestern Bali.

This home sits in a dense forest, with a view of the river below, and is surrounded by large amounts of vegetation that allow it to blend in with its surroundings. The idea was to create a home that appears as part of the earth itself, and that sometimes disappears within the earth, and at other times emerges.

The home is a series of buildings located on different levels of sire, each one accommodating a different function, a characteristic typical of traditional Balinese architecture.  Intermediate spaces and small gardens are found on the ground level, and offer uninterrupted views of the forest, while the “camouflaged” roofs are covered with various levels of vegetation to provide a cooling effect to the lower spaces and help to collect rainwater. The common spaces in the chameleon villa are kept open to the outside, while the bedrooms and other spaces, such as the office and the gymnasium are kept more private and closed towards the interior.

It really does seem to blend in with the site making it a prime getaway.
