The stay has been lifted!
What a fabulously fitting end to a remarkable gay week.
U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker decided yesterday that California officials could begin issuing licenses to gay men and lesbians beginning August 18th, though his order does give Prop H8ers six days to appeal and, perhaps win further postponement of his decision that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to wed.
Walker wrote, "Proposition 8 inflicts harm on gays and lesbians in California."
And he said that any significant delay in his August 4th ruling taking effect would "serve only to delay (same-sex couples) access to the remedy to which they have shown they are entitled." Entitled.
Equality.
Marriage.
It's a great day, y'all.
The stay is lifted.
Don't celebrate yet. Late yesterday the haters filed a motion for a stay in the 9th circuit court of appeals.
