Architecture Wednesday: Silverado

Silverado is in the perfect spot, in Oakville, California … wine country … and sits high atop a hill on sixty acres overlooking the valley.

There’s almost no place better.

It’s a one-of-a-kind home, designed by architect John Maniscalco, that is sleek and modern and yet blends in with the landscape. In addition to the vast interior spaces, there are more than 3,000 square of covered porches and terraces.

The main house features four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a great room with fireplace, dining and family rooms, a surround sound home theater, office, an infinity edge pool, and a 2000-bottle … let that sink in … 2000-bottle wine cave carved directly into the hillside.

It’s a very 21st century home, too, with centralized controls that make simple work of adjusting lighting, music, temperature, security and automatic louvers and shades throughout the home. In addition, there are “green” features like an electric car charging station, solar array, reverse-osmotic water filtration, central air conditioning and radiant heating.

There is also an adjacent guest house with one bedroom, one bath, living and dining room, kitchenette, outdoor shower and pool bathroom with sweeping views of Napa Valley.
In addition, also located on the property, is a separate guest retreat with one bedroom, one bath, a living room, full kitchen and family room.

Now the house, er, houses, are nice, but you also get your own recreational park, accessed via a private road, with tennis and bocce courts, an outdoor kitchen and hearth, and an approximately one acre organic garden and orchard.

This pristinely-manicured green space, shaded by 100-year old oak trees, houses groves of fruit and olive trees and an active honeybee colony.

It’s green, and organic and relaxing, and, did I mention, you can store 2000 bottles of wine?

That would get me through most of the winter …

  1. I love the inside, but from the outside it's very 60's retro motel look!

I don't usually go for these "box" houses, but I love Oakville and I love the views.
