Maine Diocese Won't Campaign Against Marriage Equality

What's this? The Roman Catholic Diocese of Maine announced that it will take no active role in a political campaign against a same-sex marriage referendum?
Catholic, say what?
Bishop Richard Malone says the diocese will expand it's existing educational program to better inform church members about the qualities and benefits of marriage between one man and one woman.
Oh. They are being gay-friendly, but they aren't necessarily being gay-unfriendly, either.
They won't say that same-sex marriage is bad, but they will be ranting and raving that opposite-sex marriage is what God wants, you know, because God doesn't like The Gays, and doesn't want The Gays to have equality in civil or legal matters, because God is all up in out governmental grill.
Malone says he and other church leaders "haven't done a good job" providing this type instruction to its members, so many Catholics aren't informed about the "true nature of marriage."
True nature? You mean, the union of two people? The commitment of two people?
Oh, two opposite sexed people.
Yeah, that's what God wants.
But then, and this is where the good Bishop loses me, Malone says the diocese doesn't want to impose a law or belief on anyone, but it does want to make the church's position known and contribute to the public debate over the push to redefine marriage, or, as he said, "It's our constitutional right to make our voices heard."
Oh, pish posh Bish. The Constitution does not apply to your religious teachings. Just like your religious teachings do not apply to the Constitution,
I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it, keep your religion out of my laws and I'll work to keep my laws out of your religion. If your church doesn't want to perform a same-sex marriage, then don't. I'm sure there are many more open-minded religious institutions that would gladly perform the ceremony.
And accept the groom-and-groom's, or the bride-and-bride's offerings to that church, too.
