Architecture Wednesday: 1907 Hollywood Craftsman

Okay, so she’s 116-years-old, but this is Hollywood and girl has had some work done to her and she still looks fabulous, retaining a lot of the charm from the Good Old Days: wood floors, skylights, windows, and a shingle façade.

And yet she feels new and vibrant. Some of the original floors have been painted in stark white to create a kind of art gallery vibe; but those white floors give way to jewel-toned rooms and floors, and original coffered ceilings.

The living room is cozy, with an abundance of windows and a painted brick fireplace. The soaring ceilings and walls of the primary bedroom are painted cerulean, white a hallway painted canary yellow leads to a sweet, cottage-style room that includes another bedroom and Mediterranean-esque bathroom with intricate tile and a soaking tub.

Meanwhile, the kitchen gives me beach bungalow realness with butcherblock countertops, open shelving, and a breakfast nook; in the dining room a hip ridge skylight provides ample light to a formal dining room, as does a wall of windows and doors that open onto the garden.

There are two other structures on the property: one features a private deck and can be a studio, office or even a gym, while there is an ADU—Additional Dwelling Unit—at the rear of the property.

Oh, and being Hollywood, of course there’s a pool, a spa, and an outdoor fireplace. As I said before, she’s been around a while but she looks good!

  1. There are some who would scream sacrilege about the wood being painted, but I am not one of them. The exterior has been maintained and its heritage honored, so the interiors should reflect the current owners! We lived in a 1906 Craftsman ages ago for a short while before moving overseas (work-related) and I still miss that house! Even though it wasn't in Hollywood, we had a pool and a very modern kitchen. Sadly, its 250k price is now in the millions and out of my price range! Thanks for the tour, sweetpea! xo

  2. Not bad!!! I could live there...but must admit the curb appeal of the house is excellent!!!! The exterior and outdoor amenities bowled me over than the interior. But overall love the size of the home.

  3. I think back to when the kids
    were little and what they could
    do with all that white... of
    course Bob would say let Carlos
    clean it.
    xoxo :-)

  4. A lot (A LOT) of the interior decisions are different from what I would make, but what great spaces. And outside it’s wonderful. We had a 1924 Spanish-style craftsman in San Diego. Our favorite house.

  5. I love this. I will be downsizing in the coming months, and this would be lovely. But even it too is too much space for just me now, but smaller than what I have now. I'm not even using 3/4 of my house. I'd live on that patio.

  6. Oh she's a beauty isn't she. I even (mostly) like the vibrant indoor colour scheme. But man-oh-man, if I saw that place from the outside, that garden and pool (and assuming I had the money) I think I would buy it without even going inside!

    Normally I would hate to see the woodwork in a Craftsman house painted, but this I really love … even the cerulean and mustard!
    Glad you liked it.

    @Maddie
    I love the property and I love the interiors; the dining room glass ceiling sells it for me, as does the pool.

    @TDM
    I’d give Carlos a trial period before hiring a maid!

    @Mitchell
    I am not a Cerulean Mustard guy but for some reason I love it here; and I love the white.
    Go figure!
    And I would love a Spanish style home, but Carlos? Not so much.

    The patio and pool area and gardens are gorgeous. I might rent out the main house and live in the studio space.

    @Adam
    It was for sale. But I couldn’t raise all the coins to buy it!

    @Treaders
    I’m with the you, the gardens and pool area, outdoor fireplace etc. are lovely.

  8. Love the house. Love the white walls. Dislike every pc. of furniture. It all goes to the curb, except the outdoor stuff. These people have horrible taste in furniture. But... I do like most of the artwork... so, there's that. Thanks for sharing, Bob. I have no idea where I will be living in 5 years! So, these houses of yours give me hope...

  9. The white needs to go... that house needs more bright, bold colors! with the right paint that could be a jewel!

  10. That rocking chair is a total hoot!! The house is nice but good for someone younger and able to keep up the grounds!

  11. Whoa!
    Over a hundred years old? It looks fantastic. I love the combo of white/jewel colors most. It brings two styles together very well. It manages to be cozy and elegant.
    And outside? Darn. I want that sitting area with the outdoor fireplace for chilly nights. NOW.

    XOXO

  12. Such a bargain at $3,200,000. Will you be making an offer?

  13. Let me jump in! Love the exterior and the bones on the inside BUT I am averse to white. To me, white is not a color. Too much of it here. And white floors to boot. No!

    I hadn’t noticed the furniture but, now that you mention it …

    @Dave
    I don’t mind the whites and grays given that there are bold colors in other areas.

    @Marcia
    That is one hideous piece of furniture! And I would definitely need a gardener.

    @Six
    She looks good for her age, no? And the yards really make it seem like a world away!
    Xoxo

    @Yorkshire
    Sadly, my money is tied up in … yeah, way outta my price range.

    @Victor
    I can forgive the white because of the vibrant colors elsewhere, and the vibrant color of the gardens through the windows.

    There are lots of bungalows in the town I live in, Craftsman, Italianate, etc. I can’t think of anything more perfect than this sort of small house. Of course, these days, you’re talking upwards of one million for something like this. God help the young family (or soon to retire fucks like us) trying to get a foothold in the world of the landed gentry these days, where ever they are.

  16. I like all the windows and the beautiful garden, but I'm not sure about the monochromatic interior (at least before you get to those "jewel-toned" rooms). I think I'd have refinished the wood floors rather than painting them -- and I'd leave the fireplace brick unpainted too.

  17. Craftsman is my favorite style. I love all of the nooks and crannies. This one gets 10 stars.

    We have lots of these Craftsman homes in Camden, and while this one I featured sold for more than $3 million, they are much less here. Which just means DON’T MOVE TO LA!!!! 😁

    @Steve
    There are those who think it’s sacrilege to paint brick or old woodwork, but in many cases I am not one of them. Now I am thinking of a monochromatic room at Casa Bob y Carlos … if I can find the right color!

  19. It is not beyond saving, but it should be a crime to try to shoehorn modern into a craftsman. When it was new 1907 it had a more functional kitchen,kitchen designers must all by young with backs that still bend, and most of them must not have ever cooked in a kitchen. Rant over, I feel better.
