Newport

Newport is a small town on the coast, about 7 miles from my Dad’s house in Toledo; it’s kind of that trashy tourist town with a boatload of t-shirt shops and cheesy museums, but it’s also got some gorgeous views, some great beers—the Rogue Brewery sits right on the bay—and is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium—where my Dad is a volunteer, Nye Beach, a funky section of town, and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

It’s that cool combination of funk and cheese and nature and vistas and good food … and great beer … I recommend the Dead Guy Ale.

And it’s also home to sea lions, who have taken over a section of the harbor and sun themselves, and make quite a racket, all day long. While some cities work to move the sea lions out of the harbor, Newport actually raises money to keep an area of the harbor specifically for the sea lions.

I like that, too, after all, the sea lions were there first, right?

I adore funky, cheesy places with nature, vistas and sea lions! These particular sea lions look the way I've been feeling for the past couple of days. Nice pictures.

I like the special sea lions sunbeds; I trust the harbour master doesn't charge for them?

Spent a lot of time down in that area when I
was a kid and we lived in the states.
Glad you got good weather for those pictures.

Well, as a tourist, it sure looks inviting to me! We had family with a lake house in Florence an hour south of there. I loved visiting... but not for very long.

@Mitchell
Florence is a very pretty coastal town, too. We've been down there quite a bit when we visit.

I got all excited and thought you meant Newport Rhode Island!!!!!! I would love to see you post on that. I forgot it was the west coast. Beautiful pictures...it sort of reminds me of summer in P-Town in feel and town. Minus the seals. In place of them would be very large, rotund, slug like bears poolside on a chaise.

Ah, that's so cool! I love little touristy towns.
