Architecture Wednesday: Not-So-Little House on the Prairie

If you’ve got the land, why not? This rustic modern home in Independence, Minnesota, sits on over 90 acres of sweeping prairie land, and was designed to maximize views.

The architects achieved this with a splayed floorplan that allows for long views while merging indoor-outdoor living spaces. This home’s layout is organized into crossing wings, with the main level encompassing the public zones—kitchen, dining room, family room and porch, in addition to the support spaces of the mudroom, wine cellar—and y’all know how much a wine cellar is a support space for me—and a dog washing room.

The master bedroom suite, which is also on the main level, features a private staircase that connects to the children’s bedrooms above, while a bridge connects the children’s bedrooms to the other wings of the house, where you’ll find the guest bedrooms and a loft bunkroom.

I love the sense of barn in the house, with the mix of salvaged materials along with clean, modern elements and lots of windows. And while the floors aren’t wood—the first-floor features exposed concrete floors—there is weathered hardwood on both exterior siding and interior walls and some ceilings.

And, even if it has some barn elements, there is an actual barn on the property, used to house equipment and be a party space with its own kitchen. Then there’s the pool and pool house; the outdoor kitchen; the terraces and decks and patios, and wild prairie as far as the eye can see.

If I had to live in the middle of nowhere, this is it … with the support of a fully stocked wine cellar.

  1. This is luxe country living, of course. Their loft bunkroom bedroom is the size of my first apartment. Love the idea of the wine cave. Damn. I'd be an alkie is two weeks.
The bedroom suite on the main level is a good touch, while keeping the kids upstairs. Love the idea of having a chalkboard so low for the kids to destroy, well, use.
And reclaimed materials? Sign me up.

    XOXO

  2. I like the stone and the wood together....but the use of wood went a bit over kill. I like touches, not for it to be everywhere. The house has some cool use of space and elements from the barn. It's nice but not one of my favorites. The outside for me need more nature. It's so barren looking outside. I like my trees.

Many of these home are beautiful, but who needs this much space? I've known people with homes like this, and many never use half of the home.

  4. have you any idea how much snow they get in Minnesota? All that glass? It looks nice, but that place must be a real bitch to heat.

  5. The materials used are rich. The spaces and vistas are grand. Some unusual, custom furniture but still has the look of a trendy hotel/furniture showroom. And don't get me started on the size of the place. Really? I have family members (whom I love) who have an enormous custom-built house because they can afford it. Even with their 3 kids and dog, and some dinners with friends, they don't use more than a quarter of it. Just a showy waste in my opinion. But then nobody asked for my opinion.

  6. In a way, breathtaking. So, it is beautiful. But also a monument about everything that is wrong with the way rich people think and live. I dunno. I have been in awe of things like this for some time, but recently, it feels wrong. Anyhoo... just my thought today, as I was looking at these awesome pics. I do love the aesthetic and the locale. Minnesota is lovely in the late spring and summer.

  7. There are some strong points, but overall not my cup of tea. All of that and no upper cabinets in the kitchen. Obviously designed by a person who does not really cook. All of that and bunk beds in the kids room? Really, who wants to fall out of the top bunk on a cold winter morning.
