Architecture Wednesday: Patrick Swayze’s Rancho Bizarro

This is Rancho Bizarro, the former estate of Patrick Swayze and it’s up for sale; the 3,516 square foot, 3 bedroom, four-and-one-a-half bath house sits on over four acres, with a barn and stables and a horse arena, and can be yours for $4.5 million.

Automatic gates tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac reveal a unique and private retreat with expansive space to live, ride, work, and create amongst multiple structures. The primary residence is a charming 1940s California ranch-style house featuring three bedrooms, hardwood floors, and rustic exposed beams.  There is a large flex space that could easily house an extensive home gym, a fully furnished rehearsal space for dance or theater performance, or a light-filled art studio.

Across the lawn is a guest cottage with a bath, as well as an oversized detached garage and storage space. The grounds also include two round pens, a goat pen with resident goats Cocoa and Caramel, and two friendly ducks named Baby and Johnny who enjoy lounging under the lush trees on the property.

The ideal spot for a little Dirty Dancing.

    Very pretty.
I like Ranch style houses and I think they are practical. The layout is cool, for a house this size. I wouldn’t know what to do with some of it.
I gaped at that wallpaper though. It gave me Golden Girls.

    XOXO

    1. Yeah, I love the palm trees but that was too much paper!

  2. A great space and property. I could live without some of the interior design features, but that’s easily resolved. And I love many other of the interior design features. But, sorry, it’s not in Spain.

    1. I like the house, y'all can have the stables ... and I'm coming for that Golden Girls wallpaper at once!

  3. Wow. The owner liked that western / farmhouse feel, eh?

    1. They did, but it is kind of a horse ranch so at least they kept the house true.

  5. Well.....I don't hate completely. But not in love with it either. I will say the kitchen is stunning. And the bath with the metro tile I absolutely love. And as we know no home is completely without a fully furnished rehearsal space for dance or theater performance. I mean, how else can I and the house boys reenact the Pirates of Penzance?

    1. I do like the kitchen and dining area, and the yard and pool, but as sure as my name is NOT Blanche Devereaux I need that wall paper down!!!

  6. The bath with the stairway up to the tub? Love that. But sweet Jesus, I do hate those ceilings, my head isn't nearly big enough to require all that space.

  9. When we finally decided to buy a house in the South, the MITM reminded me to look at "the bones" of the house and past all the outrageous wallpaper (they do love some wallpaper in SAV)! All this to say, great bones, but too much house (and property) for me, sweetpea! xoxo

    1. Yeah, I'd sell some of the property and just keep the house and maybe Air BnB it.

  10. Love this place ... except for the palm tree wallpaper in the bedroom. Bizarro, indeed.

  11. Love the colors of the exterior. That is what first caught my attention. The grounds are just phenomenal. Let us move inside. If we move everything OUT let's see what we have. I could work with this. I have never been a fan of light wood but that can be easily fixed. I would revamp the bathroom with the bathtub to not have the tub as a feature. I would turn that area into something else less intrusive. I am not a horse person BUT I could turn the stables into rentals. Hire a few horsehands to keep things in check. How about turning the flex room into a home gym, steam room, and media room. And yes, we will get rid of that damn barn door in the bedroom. Thank you for finding this for us. Have a Happy 4th. Hopefully, it will be a four-day weekend.

    1. It isn't very ostentatious at all, of course calling it Bizarro makes that quite clear!

  14. It looks very unassuming from the outside but the inside is lovely IF you do away with too much pattern/beams (in my opinion). And how nice to hear of a celebrity who didn't need 52 bedrooms! RIP Patrick!
