Architecture Wednesday: Judy Garland's Former Bel Air Estate

This is one of Bel Air's most famous houses as it is the former estate of Judy Garland and was designed by master architect, Wallace Neff. Sitting on nearly three acres of manicured grounds, this Traditional 1938 estate has been meticulously modified over the last decade by the current owners.

You enter through the circular, gated driveway and into a world of refined elegance beginning with the grand, iron staircase in  the foyer. Hardwood floors lined with custom Seagrass rugs are met with monochromatic, molded walls spanning between each storybook window; to the left is the living room, a peaceful classic feeling space, while to the right is the dining room.

Just beyond is the chef's kitchen, a nod to the charm of the 1930s but with modern luxury and convenience offering top of the line appliances, expansive marble island and a sun-drenched breakfast nook over to the backyard. In addition, there is a family room and generously sized sunroom.

Upstairs are five large-sized bedrooms, each with a private bath. The primary retreat features vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, dual walk-in closets, and lavish en-suite dressing room and bath.

Outside is an entertainer’s paradise; a brick-lined patio, sprawling lawns, a vine adorned staircase leading to the second tier where you find the in-ground pool with diving board, and pool house; the pool house was an original writer's cottage, fully restored, creating an idyllic setting to work from home.

It really is somewhere, over the rainbow …

  1. Luxurious.
It's all I can think about. The decor is very classic, very elegant. I'd more in right away. Truth is, I could probably barely afford the pool house, but that would be enough for me!

    XOXO

  2. I can imagine Judy gracefully descending the spiral staircase, or falling down the stairs. It is a rather nice house.

  3. Lovely! But can you find me a nice ranch townhouse for much, much, much, much less, Bob?

  4. Now this, this is what a call taste and timeless style. I love it, because it is traditional, mixed with some contemporary touches and is comfy and chic. The house looks simple, not flashy or has the look of "too much money", from the outside. I would move in in a heartbeat, the kitchen, baths and the gardens and pool sold me first. the staircase is a great selling point too. And we know I love a good entrance.

    1. I agree about it being timeless and, yes, I can see you making an entrance down those stairs with Houseboys on each side!

Yep, stately old Hollywood elegance and style and, yet, mind-numbingly blah! Just yawn-inducing! Can I buy the pool and pool house separately? At least when I looked at them I wasn't struck with grade A ennui! 😴

    1. If those walls could talk. I tried to find out when, and for how long, Judy lived there, but couldn't.

  7. Love the classic style. You had me at five bedrooms with private baths. Great for roommates. I extend an invitation to you and Carolos for a summer getaway. I trust there is a powder room on the first floor. All the rooms are open and full of light. I could add my touches here and there with splashes of color. I love the writer's room. Nice and cozy. Last but not least, love the grounds.

There’s no place like it! (Sorry, I had to say that). I’d be thrilled to put my ruby slippers in the pool house.

  13. Judy Garland had great taste - to choose a home like that one. Mind you, I guess the owners who followed her did their bits too.

    1. I once posted a Tudor-style beach house that belonged to Bette Davis for a few years in the 1950s, and when it came up for sale again in the 2020s, they still called it 'Bette Davis' House.'

  15. Very classy. I'd have to add some colour, but soft shades on the walls and maybe a striking painting or two.

    1. It really kept the old charm and character but tempered it with some modern touches. I really like this one, though it's too many coins and too much house!

  18. Add an elevator for my aging knees, and let me refurnish it. Add a little color. It has good bones.
