As an Awards Show Queen, and lover of snark, I have missed the Golden Globes, which wasn’t televised last year after that racism scandal. But the Globes are back and hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, out gay Black comic, and what’s not to love about a smart out gay funny Black man?
“I won’t say they were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died ... One minute you’re making mint tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the Black face of an embattled white organization.” Jerrod called his friend Avery to counsel him on the dilemma and her question was about how much he was being paid. He told her it wasn’t about the money, and she asked again about the paycheck.
“I said $500,000 and she said, ‘Boy, if you don’t put on a good suit and take them white people’s money …” He talked about agreeing to hist the show and the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association [HFPA] asking for a meeting, no, demanding a meeting …
“Or what? Are they gonna fire me? I’m the first Black host in 79 years! I’m unfireable!” But they said they just wanted to educate Jerrod on the HFPA changes regarding diversity.
“I took this job thinking they hadn’t changed at all.”

Dear, sweet, Bobulah, I never watch awards shows of any kind. I stopped years ago when I realized I no longer knew any of the people or the shows involved. I also no longer cared.

ReplyDeleteI have not watched an awards show in years. Back in my younger days I watched them all.
A few thoughts:
*Ryan Murphy is a talented man. Never been a fan but I LOVE, LOVE his desire to push the gay narrative forward. And giving gay actors WORK. I hope he sets the example to others that out, proud LGBTQ artists are bankable.
*Word on the street is that Austin Butler did the casting couch thing to get the role.
*I have watched Abbot Elementary and it was so, so. But anything with Sheryl Lee Ralph is a good thing.
*Jennifer C. is a hot mess and I love her whit and talent. The girl knows her audience and is laughing all the way to the bank.
*Eddie Murphy still looks good after all these years. I my sister is/was friends with his wife.
*Colin Farrell is a handsome man clothed and naked. Yes, I saw the sex tape. He has been in a few good movies over the years and his current one is no exception.
*Love Jerrod living his truth and giving Ms. Ross a run for her money for the amount of costume changes during a show. He better take the white boy's money and smile doing it.
*Queen Angela B. What can I say. She is great in the television show 911. Remember the time when movie stars did not do television?

ReplyDeleteThis was an excellent tutorial to the Golden Globes -- kind of an "I Watched It So You Don't Have To," which I appreciated! I was glad to see that "The White Lotus" and Coolidge did well, and I liked Peters in "Dahmer" and Butler in "Elvis" and Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan in "Everything." Those are all wins I can agree with. Oh, and "The Bear" is terrific! Give it a try!

ReplyDelete"The Fabelmans" hasn't even been released in British cinemas yet so it's hard to know if it deserves its award. I am looking forward to seeing it because I heard Mr Spielberg talking about it on BBC Radio 4. He is someone I genuinely admire but to use your language, I would not "hit" upon him.
ReplyDeleteA corduroy suit? I remember those awful things from the '70s. I've thought more than once that I would mind finding Colin Farrell in my bed. I've wondered about the cops who "verified" that Shelley Miscavige is alive and well. Were they maybe paid off or threatened sufficiently to make them abandon the search? I love Jennifer Coolidge. I didn't realize how funny she was outside of movies until I started seeing her win awards. I also found an old standup she did that was great. Regina King won't be Mrs. Pitt if I can beat her to it. I didn't watch the show, but I'm sure reading what you say about it is far more entertaining.
