Architecture Wednesday: Handcrafted Hideaway

This tiny home is just 264-square-feet—roughly one/tenth the size of Casa Bob y Carlos—and yet it feels so open and airy.

The blue-and-white home sits just 35 minutes outside of downtown Portland and about a mile up the road from Battle Ground’s Main Street, a charming thoroughfare lined with restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and antique shops.

Wrapped in lap siding on the lower portion and board-and-batten siding on the upper section, the home is marked by a massive deck and a custom cedar awning that extends from its front façade.

The living area has a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace that sections the room from the main-floor bedroom. And the kitchen while small, is as comfortable and functional as a standard-size kitchen, with a sink is nestled under a large window; an adjacent dining area accommodates as many as four guests, who sit comfortably on a built-in wood bench with a live edge and a pair of leather-upholstered stools that pull up to an oak-slab table. The table serves double-duty as it can also be used as a workstation.

On either side of the fireplace, there are angled board-and-batten pocket doors that close off the bedroom when privacy is needed. In the bedroom, a vaulted ceiling with a ledge where the walls and the ceiling meet creates a feeling of airiness. And on the opposite end of the tiny home, up an actual staircase, is the loft bedroom for guests, with windows to the forest outside.

It’s a wee bit small for, say two gay men and their three pets, especially when one of the men likes a bit of privacy, but it’s comfy and cozy and homey., and perfect for a getaway, as the builders rent the home as an Airbnb.

  1. Too white, and, as you infer, not made for pets.

    1. The white makes it feel lighter and larger, though.

  3. Oh she's a beauty! I actually spent some time looking into tiny homes, but doubt I'd ever move into one. That being said, having had an RV for 15 years I don't mind limited space - and the owners have done that place up beautifully!

    1. I could vacation in one, but full time might be iffy.

  4. I enjoy looking at the tiny homes because they really utilize the available space in such surprising ways!
My 1 BR apartment is 550 sq.ft., so I can identify with this little home!

    1. They are creative uses of space, but I'd need a separate one for my times to myself!

  5. I'm impressed they fit two "bedrooms" into that tiny place!

    1. It's amazing how compact it all is, even having everything AND a fireplace!

  6. Brilliantly and beautifully designed. And REAL stairs. No charming but deadly spirals.

    1. I might feel claustrophobic in that loft bedroom, but the other one is quite nice!

  7. Really an attractive place but a bit small for me even though I live alone. It might fit my 130 pound Anatolian mix though. Plus, I would need a second one attached just as a library.

    1. I like the idea of the library addition!

  8. I could do it IF I had storage. I don't need a lot but Daddy has clothes and other stuff that I need to put away. I don't need a lot. Maybe a double closet for the clothes and another square like closet to put "stuff" in. I would love to see the fridge.

    1. I think, as with most Tiny Homes, a lot of storage is hidden, under beds and such.

  9. This on your property as a Airbnb would be great to bring in extra income for travel and buy Carlos and little something, something.

    1. Do I want guests in my backyard???? Well, yeah, maybe for the coins.

  10. It's perf.
I would move in in a heartbeat because I got no man and no pets. Love the clean, lean interiors. Very stylish and space is very well used. As VR says, as an AirBNB it would be fantastic, too.

    XOXO

We live full time in our large 5th wheel (350 sf) and are very comfortable but wouldn't want to go any smaller. It's a really cute Airbnb though, all the white makes it very light and airy and I love that little fireplace!

  13. it might be perfect as a weekend getaway, but for a permanent living space, you'd want to be the type that spends more than half the day outside doing whatever.

  14. I think, if I'm ever on my own again, I wouldn't mind something like that, as long as I also had a garage next to it. Less cleaning, minimum utility bills.

  15. Creative use of space, nice and bright. Upstairs, if you sat up in bed, would you be seeing stars? At least it has upper cabinets in the kitchen (I would put nicer doors on them.)

  16. I worry about how warm that cabin would be in an Oregon winter so I shall not be putting in an offer.

  17. Cozy. I am in love. I would move right in. And throw out all that wreath crap. :) No, but I really do adore the house. Super fun and economical.
