Architecture Wednesday: Alaçati Stone House

Inspired by the spirit of its 130-year history, the Alaçati Stone House, located in Izmir Alaçati, was renovated and redesigned by Erdem Hamza Architecture. This building, which was once used as a business where olive oil and gum tree resin was extracted, pays homage to its past while taken on a more modern-style home.

The spaces—calm and peaceful stone walls and floor that carry from the outside to the interior—come to life again as a modern home with a spacious walled garden which is accessible through the bedrooms and the study on the entrance floor, and from the terrace off the living room, dining area and bedroom on the first floor.

A lap pool at the edge of the garden forms a large vertical surface, with a mirror at one end, reflects sunlight and the sky throughout the garden and into the home.

It’s old but new; quirky, yet livable.

  1. With the right area rugs, I'd have no problem living there.

  2. So we are moving to Turkey!! ??

I love the idea of reuse. A while back HGTV had a show where they showed homes that were built in previous business-auto showrooms, gas stations, churches, shops that had the large storefront windows, manufactory places...

I can work with this. You know me by now, I need a little color to make my day. I love thee colors that are trying to shine. The kitchen is cool. Glad the open shelving is not that a mainstay. In my condo I have no uppers. Gives it a fresh feeling. Many years ago my friend lived in Turkey and complained about the soot that feel on everything in the winter months from people using coal to heat their homes. Was a constant battle keeping things clean. On the good side he stated that the Turkish men-the younger ones-were delicious. Also, as the men matured and got older they started to spread. Welcome to life.

Pack up Carlos, get a sitter for the kids, and we can do a scouting trip and check things out for ourselves.

Happy Thanksgiving Dear!! How is Dad?? Is your brother still walking??

    Be healthy,

    Victor

    1. I could do without the soot.
Dad's very good now, and has gotten his doctors in line with his latest procedures.

Needs more yard, though DH would
    enjoy not mowing.

  4. Oh this is so me. Between the exterior design, all the stone work, the textures, the tile work and the layout I love it. The only thing I'd have to do once in the house would be to introduce darker colors. There's too much of that fleshy peach color for my liking. And I love all the arch door ways.

  5. I love the stonework, the structure, the spaces... but the interiors look too much like a commercial day spa to me.

  6. It does look lovely, but part of me thinks about this: "In Alaçatı, the summers are hot, arid, and clear; the winters are long, cold, wet, and partly cloudy; and it is windy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 43°F to 88°F and is rarely below 35°F or above 93°F." Yeah, I had to google it because Turkish friends have spoken about the "bad winters" in Turkey, sweetpea! xoxo

  9. The exterior is great. The interior and all that cream and pale gray--NO!

    1. I like the pale tones inside because things like the dining room chairs and bathroom tile really pop ... and I hate using the word 'pop'.

  10. Love the textures!
So rich! In this case, the textures just make the neutral tones stand out. Love the splash of color in the bathroom, too! I LOVE when they give these industrial buildings a new lease in life.

    XOXO
