Architecture Wednesday: Pinhão House

This house was built in Campos do Jordão , about 5200 feet above sea level in the mountains near São Paulo, Brazil. And since most of the homes there are of the European alps style, the owners and their architects wanted something … different … something tree-like.

And so the building is shaped as a fallen Pinhão,  one of the many particles that form the fruit of the local Araucaria trees. The Pinhão  is an  organic form that weaves through the trees and winds, and so the interior uses mostly ramps to recreate that movement.

The entrance hall lies at the lower level of the home where one ascends a ramp towards the living room and main social level. The narrow dimly lit curved ramp is gradually flooded with light and astonishing views.  The elliptical plan of the main level also contains an indoor spa with a swimming pool defined by the volume of the house. A ramp from that main level takes you down towards the most introspective space in the house, the wine cellar.

Wines? Introspection? Sold!

Above the social level, there are four bedrooms, with en suites, and a home office with 180 degree views of the surrounding mountains and Araucaria forests.

It’s stunning inside looking out, and just as gorgeous standing outside looking at it.

  3. I love the look. Exterior is amazing. Interior is, as well, but nothing warm and welcoming about it. More like a conference center.

  4. That is quite the model.
Love the lines. Very, very modern and unexpected. The interiors are incredible. All that space!
    Quite the sight, too.
