Architecture Wednesday: Old Into New In Pula, Croatia

Croatia has never been on my list of places to go, but if I had the chance to stay at this villa, a blend of very old and very modern, I might just pack my bags.

The villa dates back to 1890, and is located in Pula, one of the most romantic towns in Croatia. There have been many, many owners over the years, but it’s the latest owner who took the property and kept the old attraction, while adding some new charms as well.

Pula, a seafront city on the tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula, has a gorgeous harbor, a long, beach-lined coast, Roman ruins, and this villa; there would be a lot to do, and there might be little more to do than sipping wine and taking a swim.

The interior maintains the old stone walls while also adding a minimalist, industrial edge, with skylights and glass floors and simple lines.

The new owner had one request for his villa: create a living space that is a mix of traditional and modern styles, without trying so hard to force that “let’s build old” style.

I think it works.

  4. We had written off Croatia as a place to live because of gay rights issues. But it's ranking among 45 European nations has improved -- from 12 to 5 in the past year. I MIGHT consider checking out that villa, too.
