Architecture Wednesday: Topanga Canyon Spanish Contemporary

Here we are, back in Topanga Canyon again, though this one if nothing like last weeks’ 1970s rustic vibes. This sleek Spanish style oasis is tranquil and peaceful and muted and calm and contemporary.

This Spanish-inspired residence blends seamlessly with the lush natural landscape and the two bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom home has been fully remodeled. It now features hand troweled lime plaster in all living spaces and wide white oak plank floors throughout.

The bright herringbone floored sunken living room opens up to a deck over the attached garage and has sweeping canyon views and a double-sided fireplace that is also open to the kitchen. On that deck you have an outdoor dining area, lounge, built in BBQ and outdoor fireplace. Inside, just off the living room is the dining area and the kitchen featuring limestone floors, travertine countertops, custom plaster, reclaimed oak beam shelving, hand patina'd brass hardware, and a nickel sink faucet & pot filler.

There are two spacious primary ensuite bedrooms, the first with an adjoining office/sitting room and a designer bathroom with travertine floors and counters, and vintage beam accents.  The second primary suite has a built-in reading nook and bathroom with stone floors and soaking tub.

The backyard is sited under a mature palm tree, with a saltwater pool, spa and tons of space for lounging and dining.

It’s peaceful and calm and luxurious …

  1. I like that, but I'd need to add color to keep it from looking so bland, more neutered than Spanish.

    1. It's more beige than I like, but rugs and art and maybe some Spanish tile will go a ,long way.

  2. Lovely!
I am not too much into the Spanish style but some settings (like this one) seem to scream for it. That living room is HUGE. Perfect for entertaining? And the bedrooms seem to be good sized (even though one seems to open to the dining room?). Love the pool. It looks so... inviting??

    XOXO

    1. I love some Spanish architecture and I love the spaces in this house, but, yeah, that one bedroom does open off the dining room.

  3. I want to live here! How lovely. I could quibble with that ebony dining set, but otherwise... wow. Talk about bringing light and the outdoors and space into a home. Just lovely. Thanks for sharing this. P.S. Love your header photo.

    1. It's perfect for that indoor outdoor living between that front deck and the back patio and pool.
That header photo is one of my favorites of The Great Tuxedo.

  5. Oh my God this one has me Lock Stock and Barrel gin Barrel that is! This is absolutely spectacular. And I absolutely love all the wood in that place and what's not to like about that Arch bathtub. As far as I'm concerned I even like the Furnishings in this one so they can sell them to me with the house love the color palette. I think I would probably live out by the pool and Id also probably keep that front door open for fresh air!!!

    1. It is nice how open the house is from front to back. I would need to add some bold artwork here and there, though.

  6. Another beauty but not my style. It’s not singing to me.

    1. I was gonna say maybe it's singing in Spanish, but then you of all people would understand that!

  8. My god!!

Can I fart in there? Looks too sterile.

As we all know when we buy a place all of the owner's "stuff" is gone. Good!! I can work with the bones of the place. First up is to work with a interior designer to infuse some color. Nothing garish. But something you can wake up to and not jump off a balcony. Truth be told I have never been a fan of garages in the front like some prized pig. It's the first thing one sees. I like to highlight the home. Put the garage on the side, in the back...somewhere but not smack dab in the middle of the front of the house. I love the windows. The mature views are to die for. I could spend a great deal of time on the patio/deck. Of course I will need a little shade/umbrella for my bald head.

I am ready to move! Yes!! You, Carlos, and the kids can come and spend some time on the West Coast. Mi Casa Es Su Casa!!

    1. I agree it could use some color. And it's not too terribly large, either, which is a plus.

  9. With the exception of the living room carpet, I'll take it. Would that I had the money to do so, and to hire the cleaning staff to keep it looking so lovely. With all the light, and that outdoor view, I don't think I'd ever leave the property.

    1. I'd like a more vibrant rug in the living room, but I also wouldn't leave too often!
