At the base of the Los Feliz Oaks and Bronson Canyon is this stunning renovation of a 1927 Tudor home. A front courtyard behind a tall privacy wall sets the tone as you enter the home; the main living room features an open-raftered ceiling and French doors connecting to both the front and rear courtyards.
Through the dining room is a spectacular revamped kitchen with soaring ceilings, skylights and an eat-in nook. The homeowners used custom tiles, cabinetry, floors and windows to give it a European feel. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms also on the main floor as well as a second living room with fireplace. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and bathrooms, including the primary suite with high ceilings, en suite bath, and one of five fireplaces in the home. Outside is a minimalist front courtyard while out back is a private patio with built-in seating and new landscaping.
The home has a bit of Hollywood history in that it was once owned by burlesque queen Lili St. Cyr. It is conveniently located close to both Hollywood and the Los Feliz neighborhood.
I have a little quibble in that the front seems a little desolate and the fact that it sits at the bottom of a hill with several houses peering down onto it. Still, it’s California chic and tranquil and I could get my burlesque on.
I might worry about a mudslide coming down that hill to bury my home.
ReplyDeleteThat was kinda my one complaint, too.
DeleteOMG Upton was writing about Lily St.Cyr a few posts back!
ReplyDeleteAnd this is beautiful. You are right, that front totally belies the beauty inside. Love the vaulted ceilings (and the wallpaper? ceiling in that little office). Very nice use of desaturated colors. They do bring the furniture and accessories out, no?
But that courtyard? It's a winner, baby.
Bet it costs a pretty penny, but hey...
XOXO
I need a more lush garden and some tall trees out back to keep those higher up neighbors from looking in on me!
DeleteI love a good English to her home and the renovation is phenomenal inside. Updated yet still has character and depth with all the different textures. Absolutely love the kitchen. I agree about the exterior. That bitch of a bearing wall in front would have to come down... and give a nice view where a nice view ought to be!!! Of the homes lovely facade.
ReplyDeleteEasy Joan!!!
DeleteI love the kitchen, too, but I would just ask for more plants in the garden areas.
A comfortable and homely home but there doesn't seem to be much garden.
ReplyDeleteI agree; more plants in the gardens!
Deletethe dog's mother
ReplyDeleteVery nice but should have more
garden!
xoxo :-)
Luckily that's a rather easy fix.

Great choice!! Love the uniqueness of the home. The layout works and the outside areas are great. I would hire a good landscaper to provide some color with drought resistant plantings. Someone tell me how that shower works with the shower head smack dab in the middle of the tub with no shower curtain.
ReplyDeleteI lived in LA for about a year with a friend and I would walk the neighborhoods. What a great place to see homes that were built back in the day where craftmanship was king.
You need a maid to come in and mop when the showers are over!!!
DeleteNicely done, although I share your same final critique.
ReplyDeleteIf I could pick it up and move it to a more green and lush yard it'd be just lovely.
DeleteNope, too sterile and cold looking for me. As someone else mentioned, it needs more garden, and I would say less concrete or tile.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the hardscape, but I need a lot more landscape!
DeleteI absolutely love Los Feliz. When I was still young and "working" I spent many an hour (night) in homes there, admit they were not modernized like this one, but the originals certainly had their charm and sense of wealth. Today of course, those homes sell in the millions of dollars. Too bad since that prices them out of my range.
ReplyDeleteOut of many people's ranges!!! But Los Feliz is a gorgeous neighborhood still.
DeleteToo much white, and the black and white checked kitchen floor looks like it was stolen from the backlot of Warner Brothers. The green is nice and soothing. Greens are good colors.
ReplyDeleteI think the black-and-white tile suits a Tudor home, especially in a kitchen of muted colors. If it was all white the tiles would have looked too diner.
DeleteThis one I really like.
ReplyDeleteIt does have some really interesting details and some great rooms.
DeleteI have mixed feelings on this one. That dreadful chessboard floor and horrible ceiling, plus the vanity in the bathroom that almost bulldozes the bath. It just looks so out of place to me - and yet the rest of it I like. I don't know, it is so jumbled to my mind!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the checkerboard floor because it fits in the style of the home. My main quibble is the location at the foot of that hill and the sad little garden.
DeletePass, there are too many weirdnesses in the floorplan to be fixed, and I don't like many of the expensive interior design choices that have been made.
ReplyDeleteIt's a choice ... I like the house itself, other than the yard, but I'd put my stamp on it.
