Architecture Wednesday: Starboard Rock

Talk about getting away from it all. This cabin is an idyllic waterfront property in Vinalhaven, Maine, sitting on nearly four acres with almost 300 feet of shorefront on Winter Harbor.

The home is mostly modern, originally built in 1969,but has been thoroughly renovated and features mahogany windows, cherry paneled walls and floors, a walnut entry door and cabinets, and radiant heat. There are three-bedrooms, each with views, and one-and-a-half baths. The living room features high ceilings, large windows with views to the lake, and a slate fireplace.

The eat-in kitchen has handmade custom Walnut cabinets, Subzero refrigerator and a 60-inch Lacanche range all highlighted by 18th century English reproduction tiles that were hand painted in Portugal.

Outside are two decks, one on each side of the house, ideal for summer entertaining with areas of lawn and gardens, moss-covered ledge and mature trees. The property includes a small island— Little Western Island—a private pocket beach framed by granite outcroppings, and access to a shared deep-water dock in the warm waters of Murchs Cove.

It really is quite the place to escape to … all you need is $1.7 million and a car … or a boat!

  1. Location and views: Incredible. Except in winter when just the views are incredible. The entire interior leaves me absolutely cold. Come to think of it, the exterior doesn’t excite me either.

    1. I don't mind all the wood on the inside except for in the kitchen where it looks cheap. But the views, any season of the year, would be stunning.

  2. I like it. I would want those pieces of furniture in there.

    1. I do like the simple modest furnishings, too.

  3. I find the decorating style too spartan for my taste, but then that's just cosmetic anyway, isn't it. It's a lovely house/location, although I don't think I'd enjoy the winter storms up there!

    1. I would love being stuck up there in the winter, as long as there was food and Carlos and heat!!

  4. Nice, but too woodsy, not the place for dogs.

    1. Our little dog would love to roam those woods and the shoreline!

  5. Beautiful location for all seasons. Yes, it is Main. Yes, Main does have cold winters. But the house is sad and does not do the location justice. I say this is a tear down. Did the Unabomber live there?

    1. I don't find it sad at all; I think the weathered exterior suits the lake and Maine, and while some of the wood on the inside becomes too much, slap a little paint on it and it's good to go!

  6. I like wood but that's too much for me. I am also much too social to deal with the isolation, even if I had $17 million.

    1. I don't mind the isolation for those times when I've had enough of people!

  7. IF I had 1.7M to buy that fantastic house I'd have to furnish it a bit more softly as it's currently a bit too sparse for my taste. Also, IF I could drop 1.7M on a house and then furnish it, it would NOT be my year round residence! It would be used as a get-away-from-the agonies-of-being-rich place! (I mean, if we're going to dream, sweetpea, let's dream BIG!) xoxo

  8. Me, a bunch of little dogs, a lot of books. I could go inside and never have to go outside again.

  9. Perf.
I'm with MNF: lots of books, some edibles and maybe company. Any season, though, but Summer would be absolutely stunning. I think the exterior is going to look better and better with the years. The interior is a little woodsy, but duh, it's a cabin...
The furniture is very of the time it was built, and I cannot live with that. I would probably IKEA it beyond recognition. The bathroom is fab.

    XOXO

    1. It does need better furnishings, though I love the sort of modern simplicity of t. And some color would be a must!

  10. I will be myself in a smaller home. Been busy downsizing and getting ready to sell the monstrosity I currently live. The beach locale, there is nothing around me and looking forward to not being around people all the time. Even this one seems big to me now. This home is gorgeous...love the outside, but way too much wood inside for my liking. Oddly for me, it feels cold.

    1. I agree about all the wood inside; it feels cheap to me. But I love the isolation and the property and the exterior!

  11. Sitting on a rocky shore, I would expect the exterior to be rock also. The interior has far too much wood for my liking and I always get confused when I read sub-zero refrigerator, wouldn't that be a freezer? Who keeps normal fridge foods at sub-zero temperatures?

    1. I never thought that about sub-zero. Now I need to investigate!

  12. Rare for me, but I will pass. I like wood, but too much of a good thing, it too much. (Mind your dirty minds)

  13. Beautiful, but they need some rugs and houseplants. I wonder how one even buys land in such a rugged place? Are there lots, or do you just buy the whole island or peninsula or whatever?
