Architecture Wednesday: Aussie Church

Again with the church, eh?

Well, while I dislike the idea of “going” to church,. I love the idea of living in a former church. And I love this one, located in Willunga, South Australia because the owners, along with their architect and designer, created a three-bedroom family home that exists totally within the original church footprint, and did not divide the space unnecessarily.

It's an eclectic, modern, Bohemian home that just happened to, once upon a time, be a church.

Praise Jesus it’s now just a cool home.

  1. It IS attractive now, though I myself could never live in a former church with reminders of its former use all over the place, finding it so creepy I'd never be able to sleep. But well done for those who don't find this a problem.

  2. I love this and the idea of taking over a church. That’s been my fantasy ever since I saw “Alice’s Restaurant.”

  3. The white walls would have to go, but otherwise this is splendid, though I would take out the swing.

    1. I think the white walls make it feel much larger and show off the art, and I'm keeping the swing.

  4. I absolutely love this. And it's one, where there seems to be no remnant of the church inside. And I love that multi-leveledness. Like where the dining room is it's raised up. That kitchen is to die for. I also love some of the cutaways on upper levels of other rooms . It almost creates like it or installation in itself And even though it's not architecture I love their color palette they chose.

    1. I love the doorways and the windows, and yes that kitchen. And I love the color palate too.

    2. The dining room is NOT raised, it's a trick of the lighting that makes it seem that way.

    1. I'd like a swing in the living room so I could watch Tv and swing and sip wine.

  6. Great selection!!

I may have stated in the past, I love repurposing old gas stations, churches, store fronts, car dealerships, factories, schools...into homes.

Love the creativity of it all.

    1. I love the idea of something that was built for one purpose being repurposed as a home. We have an old firehouse here in town that has been turned into the most gorgeous home.

  7. That's lovely. I sometimes walked past an open door in a small town and longed to go inside. It was an old church that had been transformed into a home.

    Love,
    Janie

  8. Ah!
You had me at church. I like nothing better than a church put to good use, like in this case. I love everything: the airy quality of the spaces, the walls that do not seem to be falling over you, the distribution of the sitting areas, everything.
They did a great job bringing color into the bedrooms. They feel cozy.
    Love it.

    XOXO
