Architecture Wednesday: Suncrest

Another home on the water, though this one, Suncrest, is an idyllic retreat on Orcas Island.

This 3,000-square-foot residence sits on a 26-acre site comprised of a mature Douglas fir and Pacific madrone forest, with rock outcroppings and several small ponds. Since the clients wanted a home that minimized site impacts—and utilized their favorite materials like wood and concrete—the home was positioned where the forest gives way to a rocky clearing with views to the Salish Sea, a waterway straddling the United States and Canada. In addition, the home was carefully situated to require a minimum of tree removal and to allow every room in the long, narrow footprint of the home a view of the sea and forest.

The material palette of the home was chosen to harmonize with the colors and textures of the natural surroundings and consists of wood from the forest—Douglas fir and madrone—along with concrete, zinc, steel and glass.

It seems quite simple, simple style, simple materials, and yet the exteriors are fantastic. I love the gentle curve of the home, it’s narrow, basically one room wide, nature, it’s respect for the land and the forest.

I could live quite nicely there.

  1. Do enjoy Orcas Island and
    all the San Juan islands.
Looks like they did a good
    job blending with the landscape.

  2. Too modern-day and sleek Air B&B for me but must admit I like the look of the concrete floors. I like those with handsome area rugs.

  3. I'm trying to start living by the 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything' code. So......

They did work to make it less obtrusive than other homes.

I like the industrial-ness of it, especially with the views and the forest.

C'mon, you know you wanna say it ...

    @Mitchell
I like the seclusion ... I could live with that.

  5. Love it.
I love places that look totally unassuming and have great design. I also like the seclusion. Ideal for retiring. And that bathroom!
BTW, I love concrete floors. I think they're fab.

    XOXO

  6. I actually really like this one. There just a flow to it that I find relaxing--maybe it's the color palette.

  7. I always look for the heating and/or AC ducts - offhand I dont see any here - wondering if they dont need AC although a hot summer I spent in Vancouver some years back would tell me differently - maybe the heat is radiant under those concrete floors?? Inquiring minds and all that stuff lol

  8. Enjoy the utilitarian look. I am not a fan of light wood. I would give it a touch more personality-i.e COLOR!!

  9. Fascinating. All the comfort and warmth of a modern park building or a ranger station. Very odd. I like it, but the furnishings...? No. I would love to sleep on that floor!

  10. I was hesitant at first because it sounded like it was going to be a shotgun-style house in concrete, but I was pleasantly surprised! Thanks for including the floor plan which explained the photos. I like the look of the house and the setting, but I'm still too much of a city girl to even consider living in something like that on a permanent basis. Not that there's any possibility of that in my future, sweetpea! xoxo
