Architecture Wednesday: A Beach Two-Fer

If you ever wanted a beach compound, well here you go. Not one, but two designer-renovated California Beach Bungalow on a single lot located just a few blocks from the beach!

The main house features 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a completely remodeled gourmet kitchen, breakfast nook, laundry room, great room, primary bedroom with glass sliders, and two other bedrooms featuring custom closets.

The house has paid solar , an EV charger, and has been fully rewired and replumbed; there are new tankless water heaters, a new roof and HVAC system, a retrofitted foundation, new windows and doors., and new coastal hardwood floors,  while retaining all the original built-ins and millwork.

The back house features one bedroom with walk-in closet, a modern kitchen, laundry room, spa-like bathroom, and it's own private backyard.

The entire property features lush drought-tolerant professionally designed landscaping, all on a drip system controlled by an app, a large two-car garage with a separate kayak/bike/toy storage building and a hot tub.

The home is extremely quiet and serene, but moments away from incredible restaurants, beaches, shops, bars, coffee, schools and everything that Long Beach has to offer. In fact, it is such a deal, that it recently sold for $1.5 million, some $250,000 over asking.

    1. I do agree it needs some new paint on the walls but I can do that!

  3. Outside my price range (naturally!) but it fits my taste perfectly. I'd have to add a little color, but I love that it's not open floor with high ceilings. And the kitchen is great. I spend a lot of my time in the kitchen, so it's always the deciding factor for me!

  4. Charming. We would all do a much better job with the furnishings (and the gardens).

    1. I like the drought tolerant landscape but, yes, the furniture will go with the seller.

  5. Nice, but all that white would be a bugger to keep clean. My favorite room is the bathroom because it has a bit of color to it.

Did I not pay attention yesterday? I see your header has been changed. I like it!

  6. Oh yes......you had me at beach.....this is so me. And unlike Dave I don't mind all the white. I love lots of white in a beach house...crisp clean and calm. The kitchen and baths are very charming. I firmly think when I retire...a long way yet...it will be to a beach locale.

    1. I mean, live in one and rent out the other and you've got built in income for the all the houseboys!

I have no need for a compound, especially one so cramped! I usually like white and bright, but somehow the entire property seems boring as hell and just trying too hard! I mean, waking up in SoCal and my giant bedroom windows give a view of nothing but the bungalow I didn't need and the guests or renters sitting on their stoop 5 feet from my morning face!! Nightmare!! 😱

    1. I might like it for family or very close friends to live in, but strangers might be kinda creepy!

  9. I love it. I can tweak it to my taste. We all know when the home is sold the furnishings and what not go with the seller. Yea, you can buy this and that if the former owner is willing. I could live in the main house and use the home in the back for a rental or AirBnB. What I love about the house is how they kept some of old features and updated the home. I just love how older homes had unique features-cabinets, sinks, bathrooms, milk doors, built-ins... I used to live in an older apartment-Mirabeau Manor- and they had such great old flairs. The kitchen cabinets were metal. The layout was spectacular. Every inch was well thought out. Rose and black bathroom tile. A pantry that was the width of the back of the kitchen with a milk door that opened into the hallway.... Can't forget the outside of the house. Great for cool days of reading and surfing on Grinder. Love the zero landscape because one of the reasons I own a condo is I don't want to spend my free time doing yard work.

    1. I like the old details to the house and would also splash the place with color!

  10. I'd move in tomorrow.
This is totally my vibe and I love the idea of being close to the beach? What's not to like?
I think that white is a versatile neutral and the touches of color in the accessories and the furniture are just right. You know my taste and that little backyard is totally my vibe.

    XOXO

    1. I would like more color, but not necessarily on the walls. And I am in love with a drought tolerant landscape!

  11. They look very comfortable. Interestingly we have the same style housing here, also called California Bungalows with the same external appearance.

  12. Forget that French Villa, I'll have this instead! I don't like the spidery light fitting in the third picture and would have to add a bit more colour here and there, but this is definitely my house. No floor plan available?

    1. Nope, no floor plan for this one.

  13. I could make it work, with some tweaks. I don't understand $1.5m without wall ovens, I don't bend over like I once could.
