After voting 178-167, the New Hampshire House sent the gay marriage bill to Governor John Lynch for his signature yesterday.
The bill extends the state’s marriage laws to include couples of any sex, though its wording differs from the version the House passed in March.
“Any person … may marry any other eligible person regardless of gender,” the bill states.
So now it's up to the Governor who has the final say on gay marriage. While he believes marriage should be between one man and one woman.....yawn....he hasn't yet made an announcement on whether he'll sign the bill or not.
He did, however, say, “I have a responsibility as governor to do what I think is best for the people of New Hampshire. I will continue to talk with the Legislature and with the people of New Hampshire about that bill.”
Perhaps he should take a page out of Maine Governor John Baldacci's handbook. While maintaining his belief in traditional marriage....yawn...Baldacci signed the marriage equality bill in Maine because it was the right thing to do.
Follow that lead, Governor Lynch.
If marriage equality becomes legal in New Hampshire, it will leave Rhode Island as the only New England state that does not recognize same-sex marriage.

I've got my fingers crossed for NH!
