My Two Cents: Messing and McCormack Are Setting A Dangerous Precedent

Debra Messing and Eric McCormack, Will and Grace are upset about an Emmy week fundraiser in Beverly Hills for_____ and vow to name and shame anyone who dares to show up, hoping to blacklist participants from working in Hollywood.

Messing started all this with a Tweet:
“Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know.”
And that’s fine; but then McCormack took it a step further:
“Kindly report on everyone attending this event, so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with. ”
That crossed a line in my book; if someone wants to support _____ they are allowed to do so; I, personally, think they’re utter morons or racists or asshats or all three, but it’s their right. And for Messing and McCormack to want to release their names and try to keep those _____ supporters from working in Hollywood smacks of the same kinds of things _____ likes to do.

Now, I do think the _____ supporters need to step out into the light and show themselves, but not so they can be blacklisted, but so we, the public, the ones who pay their salaries, can decide if we want to continue to support them.

Or not. But let’s not start blacklisting people … again.

And let’s think on this … what if _____ wins in 2020? And what if he decides that people who don’t support him should be blacklisted? Is that the way we’ll be doing things from now on? I am all for knowing who is publicly supporting_____, but not so we, or people like Messing and McCormack, or _____, can decide who works in Hollywood and who doesn’t.

McCarthyism cuts both ways.

  1. Lists of donors are easily accessed on the FEC website. It's no secret who is donating to Trump (or anybody else for that matter). And, it is important to know who is supporting whom.

  2. I agree with you on this, Bob. This kind of harassment can only backfire and it might even help Dump.

  3. Yes, but anybody can access lists of donors. I searched for people in Chicago and in the suburb I live in. It’s right there for all to see.
    If they’re gonna support the Orange One and his Nazi, xenophobic and homophobic policies I wanna know....

  6. sounds a bit Stalinist to me. People have the right to support and fund who they like in a democracy, but personally I think there should be NO donations for political parties or individual politicians

  7. I completely agree with you Bob, people and the media would be wild if it was in reverse. I'm surprised because W&G had an episode along this line of thinking.

    On another note, wouldn't it be awful if one day in the future, one of your coins has dump's face on it! Lol!

    I completely agree. But I don't like the suggestion of learning their names as a way to keep them from getting a job, because if it's good for Blue against Red,then it must be good for Red against blue?

    @yes!Sixpence
    But they should not be denied work--as McCormack suggests--just because they support _____. I mean, if _____wins, should his side be allowed to deny you or me work because we didn't support him?

    @Deedles
    I don't think so.

    @ Helen
    Yes!

    @Steven
    Yes ...and if a coin ever had THAT face on it, I would never use coins again!

  10. “A ballot is just a substitute for a bullet. If your vote isn’t backed by a bullet, it is meaningless. Without the bullet, people could ignore the election outcome. Voting would be pointless. Democracy has violence at its very core!” ~Muir Matteson, “The Nonviolent Zone”
    Eliminate the secret ballot and expose everyone involved.

    I didn’t read it as a blacklisting statement - to me I read it as Messing and McCormack saying they don’t want to work with people that support racists. Isn’t that their right? That’s where they are drawing the line. Are you saying that there is no behavior that would cause you to make the same statement?

    With all the effort that the thuglicans have expended to hide all identities from public scrunity with their use of dark money PAC's and funding sources this only seems reasonable.
    Consider all those who are taking a public stand on issues ( think LGBTQ rights) while secretly funding the opposition.
    All political contributions to non-profits, political campaigns, think tanks whatever shoul be in a single easily accessable, by the public, database.
    If they are ashamed of their position they shouldn't take them.
    Some privacy should be accorded to those where the opposition is violent ( think Womans Health issues and the nra) that have a record of real threatening and intimidation. Not the faus victimhood embraced by thuglicans and their ilk.
    But still beleiveing that sunlight is the best disenfectant for racist's, misognist's, ammosexuals and others who embrace the dark side of human nature. Exposing political funding is a good first step.
    As for charges of mccarthyism please look up your history. Bogus charges based upon guilt by vague association with real persuction by government and hidden agencies is what that was.
    This is not even in the same ballpark.

    It's a slippery slope suggesting that we need to know who people support politically so we can choose to out them and not work with them.
    Voting is a right, and one should not be punished for your vote.
    That's my point.
    Because if we want all _____ supporters names so we can choose to keep them from working, what do we do when the other side does the same thing?

    But what happens if _____ wins again, and then people in Hollywood, and elsewhere, decide they don't want to work with people who didn't vote for _____?
    I think people who support _____ are asshats, racists, xenophobes, faux Christians, but they have the right to vote ____ and the right to work.
    Since McCormack and Messing are relative power players in H'wood, would they use these names to keep those people from working? And then would it be okay with you of the Right did that to the Left?
    I am not the Job Police,it is not my job to say who I will and won't work with; it's called a Free Country for a reason.
