Mary Gowans Had One Son Beat 'The Gay' Out Of Her Other Son

Remember just a couple of years ago when North Carolinians voted to add discrimination to their state Constitution by banning marriage equality? And remember when a pastor up there said The Gays should be rounded up and placed in Concentration Camps so we wouldn’t mingle with the reg’lar folk? And when "Pastor" Sean Harris told his congregation that parents of gay children should beat their children? Well, those stories have lead us to this ….

Up in, of all places, Whiteville, North Carolina, Mary Gowans has been accused of having her 12-year-old son beat his older brother in order to "beat the gay away." Gowans faces misdemeanor child abuse charges as a result. 

Police say they were called to an incident on West Walter Street last weekend and when they arrived they found several people yelling and screaming.  According to the report, a 15-year-old boy said his mother, Mary Gowans, told his younger brother to strike him repeatedly, and that he was not allowed to fight back. She then reportedly made the teen strip down to his underwear, and proceeded to hit him with a belt across his body. Police found a large abrasion on the boy’s back.

Gowans, of course, is saying the story isn’t true. She says her older son was drunk when he called the police, and although she doesn’t agree with the, ahem, “gay lifestyle,” she would never harm her children.

Then she says that her older son was molested by a gay man whom he had been visiting; she also says she called the police about the matter, but nothing was done. And then she admitted to beating her son in the hopes it would stop him from visiting the man and says she was just trying to protect him.

By having him beaten, and then beating him herself.

As I said, all those homophobic laws, and Constitutional amendments, and rabid anti-LGBT pastors and preachers are responsible for this mess, When you live in a state that enacts laws saying The Gays aren’t entitled to equality, and your religious leaders say The Gays should be locked up, how can we not expect things like this to happen?

While Mary Gowans might be an awful parent, her state legislators and her religious leaders share the blame.
