Architecture Wednesday: Spanish Revival Compound

This is the Sanctuary in the Amarra community of Barton Creek—a serene enclave in one of Austin’s most coveted communities. This Mediterranean compound draws inspiration from the world's most enchanting landscapes and the wind-swept, desert-inspired home welcomes you with chiseled granite stone walls framing an open-air entry courtyard with natural features like olive and orchid trees lining the approach to the main entrance.

This home unfolds across three distinct structures: a charming casita, a third garage or fitness pavilion, and the primary residence, all thoughtfully crafted. The single-story home has privacy at its core with four bedrooms and four-and-one-half bathrooms across 5,000 square feet and 1.65 acres, including three terraced lawns that offer space to roam and a lush green space that cascades toward a Barton Creek tributary, creating a veil of privacy for the 60-foot lap pool with dual negative-edges, dining, and lounge terraces.

A Spanish Revival Portico invites you into that central courtyard, where a marble fountain, lemon trees, and a limestone fireplace lull the senses into peaceful stillness. Once inside the simplicity of timeless Mediterranean modern architecture meets artisan craftsmanship with arched hallways found in the living and dining spaces, hand-finished Venetian plaster and historic reclaimed beams with cool, coarse-grained granite floors extend outward to seven glass-paneled doors framing Hill Country views.

Off the foyer, the dining room faces the courtyard through a wall of windows. A large arched opening leads into the living room, with another wall of glass, this one framing the pool and the views; a massive stone fireplace sits at one end of the room, with the kitchen through another archway, and roughhewn beams overhead.

In the chef’s kitchen, refined luxury meets function with top-of-the-line Wolf appliances, like a built-in Wolf grilling station and wet bar to make for seamless indoor/outdoor living. The family, open to both the kitchen and the shaded back porch frame the green spaces all around and highlight the dramatic and breathtaking views and eternity-edged pool.

A small office at one side of the home shares a private patio and views with the primary suite that opens to the pool deck as well. The primary bath features dual sinks, a walk-in shows and a soaking tub with a view. There are three other bedrooms in the house, each with beamed ceilings and Hill Country views. Outside there is another living area, large dining table, as well as an outdoor kitchen for those nights when you want to live outside.

It's peaceful and serene; a true oasis in the hills.

  1. It has some nice features. Parts of it feel oversized and cold, who really needs a bathroom with enough open floor place to hold a party? I would either need to make a changes, or keep looking.

    1. It kinda makes me wanna have a party in the loo!!
But it does need color and less Wayfair looking furnishings!

  2. It doesn't seem to have much of a heart, does it?

    1. All it needs is artwork and splashes of color. I think it's generic looking to sell.

  3. This. Is. Stunning.
Not crazy about the exterior...the variegated roof tile rather throws off the aesthetic for me. But then there are the outdoor spaces --- that patio area, the pool.... The house is open and airy and light, the rooms spacious. How many banks would I need to rob? LOL.

    1. I kind of like the tile because it gives a sense of age to the home, false age, of course, as if the roof was repaired over the years.
And I think you might need several banks!

  5. I could live there and never leave. I'd order in my groceries and anything else I needed. The light throughout the home, the views, are incredible. Love it!

  7. I love it! I want to swim in that pool and look at the view forever. Too much white in the house but that's easily fixed. I'll take it.

    Love,

  8. That house is pretty and the landscape is beautiful too. From the aerial shot I thought it would be much more "mod" but I like the traditional touches.

    1. I like the arches and also the modern steel windows and doors. Get me some paint and fabric swatches and I could work with it.

  9. You had me at "fitness pavilion." First of all it's in Austin. It's Texas for god's sake. I will have to pass on that alone. I recently read a history of Austin and how it was purposely designed to be white. I almost lived there in early 2000s. The home looks barren, cold, and uninviting. Of course, if I was going to buy the place I would move everything out and start from scratch with touches of color here and there and make it a place my guests would love to stay for awhile. I do love the layout of the home. The size is a little too big. Maybe no more than 2000 square feet. I have never liked oversized kitchens, bathrooms, and the like. I like to use all the rooms of my home and if not, then I don't need it. The light and the windows are perfect. The outside space is nice and I would plant drought tolerant plants that provide color up against the bright white of the home. I do love that the home is located away from others.

    1. Well, it's styled as it is because that actually helps it sell. I'd empty it out and get some paint on the walls and some great art.
And Austin is one of the few places in Texas I could live and I could help turn the state blue!!!

  11. Wonderful, geometry, and spaces. We’d have a good time decorating. However, although it’s in Austin, it’s still Texas. And it’s enormous. So, I guess I’ll pass.

    1. I'd still take it because Austin, as they advertise, is weird!!! And I live for the weird!

  12. Texas is a no.
Even Austin is a no. Fuck that state and hot Wheels too.
Now that we talked about that, this house is fab, slightly oversized but very pretty. I think it needs artwork and plants but that’s just salad dressing. The bones are nice and that pool!

    XOXO

  13. It's a bit "white" for me, but then that's easily changed. Not too sure about what looks to be a galley kitchen either but it is beautifully done. And that infinity pool ......!
