Architecture Wednesday: Portland Storybook Home

This home—listed at $1.9M—was originally designed by renowned architect Wade Pipes and has recently been enhanced with over $500K in high-end upgrades; perched high on a hillside, and  flooded with natural light, it offers breathtaking views of four volcanoes—Mount Tabor, Mount Scott, Mount Bullard, and Mount Pitt—and Portland’s iconic bridges and is within walking distance of Forest Park.

The living room with its cozy wood-burning fireplace & bookshelves is the perfect gathering space for memorable parties and is accented by new matching French doors that open to the outdoor space and the views. The kitchen is a showpiece, boasting locally sourced handmade walnut cabinets & countertops & complemented by 200-year-old reclaimed terracotta flooring from France; the adjacent butler’s pantry with a refrigerator and freezer drawers is the ultimate smoothie and coffee bar. The main level also includes a striking new half bath with House of Hackney wallpaper. The sunroom was re-envisioned with all-new heated Moroccan tile floors, French doors & built-in shelving.

Upstairs are four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a laundry room with access to the third floor flax space, perfect for another bedroom, family room, office, or play area. The remodeled lower-level apartment—ideal for an au pair or extended family—features an exterior entrance, new concrete floors, a fully stocked kitchen, bedroom, its own laundry area, bathroom, living room and wine cellar!

Meticulously landscaped outdoor spaces include all-new limestone pavers and a 700-yr old fountain from Andalusia! Additional upgrades include a new electrical panel, 220V wiring on Summit for EV charger.

One quibble? The kitchen feels disjointed with part of it being walnut counters and deep green tile backsplash—which I love—and then stone tops on the kitchen counter and white appliances; half the room is dark, and half bright. Another quibble? That garage, down the hill, behind the house, with an apparent tunnel staircase that leads up to the basement level, feels a little escape from Alcatraz to me. But the garage is wired for EV and has ample storage for bikes & strollers.

One thing I like, though I know some of you don’t, is a wallpapered ceiling; shoot me.

  1. Thanks, I will keep looking. Great location, I like the tunnel from the garage, but the stairs kill me. There are layout issues, no true master suite, the downstairs bath is a long walk from the downstairs bedroom. The upstairs baths are very small. Those are things that are beyond skin deep that are hard to change. I would gut both kitchens and start over, but you know how I am about practical kitchens.

  2. I could easily live there. Perhaps a little less white, but when color is used? Wow. That blue tile floor! Wow! And that kitchen?

    1. I do like the color in the kitchen but half the room seems at odds with the other half.

Yummy, I’ll take it, if you can throw in a pair of bionic knees.

  4. The front is deceiving - the house is much larger and more grand than it appears from the street. I agree - that kitchen is pretty awful. The tunnel from the garage to avoid nasty weather: brilliant.

    1. I do like the finishes in the kitchen just not in the SAME kitchen.

  5. But if there are children in the home, where can they play in the yard? Won't all toys or balls just roll down the hill?
I do like the sweet stained glass window in that one bathroom.

  6. Very good use of color and natural materials, BTH.
I love how they did that kitchen. And the powder room? Yes. Also, is that wallpaper on the ceiling?
The view from the street is quite impressive. If I had that kind of money, I'd be in.

    XOXO

  7. I love this. I understand the garage and would probably enjoy the escape from Alcatraz feel. But I’m with you on the kitchen. I find the choices disturbing and I’d be uncomfortable in that room... when I wash dishes, because what else would I be doing in a kitchen?

    1. Kitchen are overrated ... I say this as we are beginning a kitchen remodel at Casa Bob y Carlos!

  8. I love it, I love it, I love it. Now this is a place I could easily live in. Not a huge fan of the dark/light photos of the kitchen but suspect if one could see the entire room in a photo it would look much different.
I've never seen wallpapered ceilings, but I kind of like it. It reminds me of putting reflective stars on the ceiling in my kid's bedrooms but for grownups. :)
I even like the built-in garage.

    1. I like a wallpapered ceiling but I don't think I'd like the tunnel stairs from garage to house!

🤔 Hmm...I don't know Portland personally, but I hear it is weird and eclectic. This house proves that and I'm not ready for it! I have nothing against wallpaper on the ceiling, but I don't care for those choices. A little dark and heavy for me in these relatively small bedrooms. And I felt there were too many surfaces jammed against other surfaces. The dark tile on the kitchen floor with dark natural wood cabinets and dark green tile felt overpowering; you are right, though, the sudden whiteness on the other side was jarring! The kitchen in the extra apartment is just plain awful/awfully plain.
I know I don't have to like the personal furnishings because they'll be gone, but I did have trouble seeing past them. The rugs clashing with easy chairs that clash with other chairs and weird little accent pieces clashing with everything else! 🫣😳 And, I understand the need to decorate the huge patio wall that separates this house from the very close house and patio next door, but that mural choice? Is that part of the half-million $ upgrade?! Looks distracting and cheap to me! 😬

  11. I love the exterior of the home, and my favorite parts inside is the stunning kitchen with its green tile work and dark woods and the lovely bathroom with the stunning wallpaper I love that. And what's not to like about all the built-ins and arched doorways!? Although I don't know how I feel four volcanoes in the vicinity.....

    1. Yeah, even dormant they're still volcanoes!

  12. I love it. The wallpaper is bold and some of its placement is different. I can deal with it. I don't mind the garage thing but as one gets older that may be a problem. How about an escalator in the home. If than can have a killer one at the Dupont Circle subway in DC, why not a home. I love the outdoor spaces. I love my light. Let's talk about that kitchen. That would have to be a redo. Compared to the rest of house it does not flow. The open shelving, dust and grease collectors, will have to go. Let's brainstorm some options and maybe we won't have to do a gut. I can probably be ok with the green tile but how about changing the stain of the cabinets and counter. Something. It looks harsh and out of place. Be forewarned the rainy days in Portland may have an effect on ones mood and disposition.

    1. I can take Portland rain because it's not as bad as the locals say ... they just don't want more people moving there.

Two kitchens and two dining rooms ?!
That would have to be reconfigured.
The wall tiles in the kitchen I would replace with handpainted tiles from Spain or Italy.
Love the wall paper in the one bathroom, similar to the whimsical themes done with the bathrooms of the first class staterooms of the French Line’s Ile de France and Normandie.
Beautiful home that needs some reconfiguring.

    1. A kitchen in the basement makes it easy to entertain down there as you won't be running up and down all the time!

  14. I like it, and what a position. The kitchen is a bit dark. Now, it is possible in my mind that wallpaper could look ok applied to high ceilings, but these are not high ceilings and it appears you would feel like there is a weight on your head when you are the rooms.

    1. I don't know, I kinda like the ceilings papered; it usually makes it feel like the ceiling is higher.
