Architecture Wednesday: Charles Gwathmey’s Connecticut Barn

Now y’all know I love a good barn conversion and, for me, this one isn’t it because they’ve removed all of the old barn except for the outside structure and turned it into some sort of Seussical barn home.

No offense to architecture Charles Gwathney but it’s not for me.

The home is five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, spread overt four floors and nearly 7,000 square feet of neon walls and once trendy, now outdated fixtures.

The main floor features the Great Room with built-in wall divider that also contains a dining room table; the small, for a home this size kitchen, three bedrooms and two-and-one-half bathrooms and what I have dubbed the Homework Hallway.

The Lower Level has the Family Room, a Guest Room, Laundry, Wine Room, two-and-one-half bathrooms and access to the pool and outdoor areas.

The Not Quite Top floor features the Primary Suite, with private balcony, two full bathrooms, two walk-in closets and a Gym/Study with Fireplace. Finally, up another spiral staircase, and I cannot reiterate how much I loathe a spiral staircase, is another office.

Head all the way down the stairs again to the basement and you c an make your way to the outdoor kitchen, living and dining areas, alongside the pool and the lush grounds—clearly the best part of the property.

The current owners renovated and expanded the home to further Gwathmey's dream adding many striking elements to the multi-level residence including glass block walls, corrugated metal cladding and interior silo encircling a :::gasp::: spiral staircase.

The property was listed at $4.8M and has apparently been sold.

  1. Well, that's the problem with allowing a designer to convince an owner to go with what's "now." Trendy never lasts, does it? But, I'd take that outdoor space in a NY minute.

    1. I so agree with you; I'd tear the house down and build a barn replica home just to have that property!

  2. Not a fan of the orange and I am with you on a spiral staircase.

    1. It's lost all its barn-ness!

  3. Wow, and not in a good way. I seriously dislike this place, inside and out.

    1. Agreed. All I like is what's outside the house!

  4. What fresh hell is this! You're right where's the barn? I am not saying going full Joanna Gaines farmhouse chic with ship lath but give me some hints that the outside coordinates, balance with the inside I love a good outdoor space for coffee, reading, dipping in the pool, and golden hour dinners with friends. My first impression is there is no character. Like boxes of rooms slapped together. There is nothing unique about it. The outside may give you excitement that something imaginative is inside. Don't get me wrong; I love my color, but this palate harkens back to the 70s or something in the ballpark. I could work with this but at $4.8 it should be ready to move in with minimal tweaks.

    1. You can see the old barn in the first photo and the last, but on the inside there's no clue as to what it was once.

🤔 When you used the word Seussical, I envisioned colorful oddities; a little whimsy, perhaps. But, what I see is a nightmare! I have never understood architecture that creates "homes" that aren't homey. Not one square foot of comfort! If the location were a little bit closer to a large urban area with an expensive university, this would make a good fraternity house...much of the place looks like dorm rooms and study carrels. But, I guffawed at the "homework hallway" as it was staged in a family home. Sitting at the computer with my calendar blotter and mail/bills slots one station over and file cabinets down the way without a wheeled office chair in sight! Made my back hurt thinking about using it! 😖 Hard pass on this one! 👎

    1. Perhaps I should have clarified: Seussical nightmare!

A laughable, unrealistic price for clusters of cubicle-like spaces painted in Mardi Gras colors. Pass!

  8. For some odd reason this whole place makes me very angry. I say find some gasoline and matches and start over.

  9. Oh. Wow.
I'm slightly speechless? And it's giving AirB&B and not in a warm way...

  10. What a great place to play hide and seek, or even better, chasey. It certainly doesn't look a home.

  11. Nope, I like colour but not those colours. Plus there is nothing in the interior to suggest you are in an old barn and silo.

    1. I agree; I love an old barn conversion but the point of that is to keep the barn!!!

  14. It's a bit of a mess, really. Disproportionately high ceilings in some parts, low ceilings in others. It looks quite 'industrial' and not at all comfortable.
