Architecture Wednesday: Art Deco Pink Lady

I love a good Art Deco home, even a pink one, and this 1938 dazzler on a quaint cul-de-sac in Oakland, California steals the show with exciting “Streamline Moderne” lines and curves, elegant corner windows, and statuesque Queen Palms.

The 2,006 square foot home features a spacious living room with dramatic volume and a lofty ceiling, more curves, a dramatic fireplace and black framed windows. The open floorplan flows seamlessly up to the dining area and an updated kitchen, and then flows out to a large rear patio. The main level includes a large primary bedroom with private balcony, a full bathroom, laundry room, and private home office. Upstairs are two more bedrooms that share a large hall bathroom.

The greenery of the garden is visible from every room, and the level-out flow to this tropical oasis make this a true California entertainers dream. Additional amenities include interior access to the 2-car garage and large basement, owned Solar Panels, Tesla Powerwall battery storage & EV charger, and all-electric Heating & Cooling.

This home really is a dazzler, on the market originally for $1.195 million and then selling for $1.9 million.

  2. "The 2,0006 square foot home ..." that's pretty damned big! LOL
Is it sitting across from a mobilehome park?

    1. I hit too many zeros! It's 2,006. And, no, that's not a mobile home park!

  3. Nice, I'd put some color on the walls and curtains on the window and it would be downright homey.

    1. I like some bright furniture and art to pop around the rooms; and the kitchen is nice, but feels dark and dated to me; I'd paint the cabinetry!

  4. I always imagine that someone with so much white furniture have never had children or grandchildren living there. Or maybe I just have a messier group! :)

  5. Not bad....while Im not feeling the interior as much... ignoring the furnishings....not bad...but not me. What sold me is the spectacular exterior and gardens. I can't place what's bothering me about the inside.

    1. I like the interior openness and the space; it's the kitchen cabinetry that looks out of place to me. I change that at once!

Ooh! Feels like I'm home! Nice kitchen, but I'm afraid someone else will have to be in charge of all the cooking and entertaining. I'm never leaving the master bedroom that opens onto that balcony! Gonna put a small library along the wall and bye bye...y'all rest of the world, you're on your own!! 😃

  12. Gorgeous, sweetpea! That's in Oakland? I had to go back to re-read the built date. It was probably as daring when it was first built as it is now! (I'm guessing the 20006 sq.ft. was a typo, right?) xoxo

  13. I love are good Art Deco. Where do I sign?

I have to think about the black framed windows. But I do see how it complements the outside of the home with the black boarders. What are "owned" Solar Panels? If they are part of the house don't you own them? Love the layout of the home. I could tweak it and make it my own. The curves are to die for. Love the outdoor spaces. I will be placing some umbrellas to protect my bald head from the sun. I love the Oakland area. Back in the day, I wanted to settle in the Berkeley/Oakland area. I was traveling around the area at the time and almost stopped and purchased one of those retro vintage kitchen tables. You know the type. They weigh a ton. Curved legs, Formica type top, and unique chairs that complement the table. I couldn't figure out how to get it into my car. I could do some serious baking in that kitchen. I am not a fan of light wood but I do like what I see.

As always thank you for posting and opening up our horizons.

    1. From Google: Solar panels are owned when the homeowner pays for the entire system and takes responsibility for it. This includes paying for the panels outright, and then having no more monthly payments. Leased panels are when the homeowner doesn't own the panels, but instead has a long-term lease from a solar installation company.

  14. Pink and Art Deco? Yes, please.
I think they may have done something to the interior. in the 30's houses were probably more divided. I don't mind the open concept and I like the furniture (I'd go a little more towards Mid-Century, though, you know). I think the interior is very nice but the garden and patio! Whoa. A little more than a million, you said?

    XOXO

    1. I agree; it was clearly opened up along the way.
More than a million to start but it sold for nearly $2 million.

    1. We used to have a two-story house, but when we moved to Camden we went one story because it does make it easier as you get :::::gulp::::: older.
