Architecture Wednesday: Owl Creek House

This cabin, in Snowmass, Colorado, is not what typically comes to mind when one thinks ‘mountain cabin.’ Where’s the wood and the stone, and the chalet ski lodge vibe? The designers at Skylab had a whole new take on the mountain cabin when they created Owl Creek House.

Rather than using natural woods and materials that reflect the scenery around the home, the architects chose to use metals and glass, and interesting geometric shapes and angles to create the ultra modern looking structure.

Nestled at the top of a hill, Owl Creek House instantly catches the attention of anyone passing by, while inside, the angles and the windows are placed to provide guests with a panoramic view of Snowmass Mountain; in fact, no matter where you sit, inside or out, you are surrounded by stunning views.

Owl Creek was designed to give people different spaces to relax together, to sit and talk, to eat, to be with one another while also interacting with nature in ways that they might not be able to at home.

Even more interesting, Owl Creek House was actually built as a singular, shared home for two families; there is one primary building for everyone, but there are also several small lodge areas clustered outside the main building that are intended as communal spaces. Being able to experience all the different spaces with friends and family makes the entire home feel intimate and open all at once!

It doesn’t seem to fit the norm of a cabin, and doesn’t seem to fit in with what people think of as a family home, but it’s all of that, with views and space for everyone.

Their water bill is probably my yearly budget for... everything? 🤣
Stunning, though. I love the contrast of the super modern and the wilderness

  2. Oddly, I really like this one! My first thought is always, who's going to clean the joint? What about Peeping Tom drones? Am I becoming somewhat paranoid these days? Sure, who isn't? This is a beautiful building despite all of that :)

  3. I too like this one, but I think it's because it has a warm feeling to it. And there is certainly enough sofa areas for orgies to commence.
