Hawaii Comes Out.....Partially

In Honolulu, a bill that would give same-sex couples in Hawaii all of the rights of marriage but without the name has been approved unanimously by the House Judiciary Committee.
LGBT rights groups are expressing cautious optimism it will become law.
It's a baby step, like I always say, but I get so pissed off with that "all the rights of marriage without the name" bull.
The measure would legalize civil unions and domestic partnerships; marriages from Massachusetts and Connecticut would be considered civil unions. So you can get married in Mass or Conn, but you won't be married if you go to Hawaii.
If you've been following my Black History Month, does this not sound like "separate but equal?"
Now, way back in '93--you know, last century--the Hawaii Supreme Court was the first in the nation to rule that barring same-sex marriage could be a violation of the state constitutional protection of equal rights. But they have barred it by calling it something else; something "less than."
I know it's a step, and every step helps, but why not jump in with both feet Hawaii?

  1. see marriage is only a religious term. I think we're better off taking it out of the legal system.

  2. Calling it something other than marriage keeps GLBT people in a 'second class' status. We deserve EQUAL rights.

Say anything, but keep it civil .......
