Here's a little repostage, a regift, if you will, of my annual holiday wish. It still holds true....for me:
Christmas means a lot of different hings to a lot of different people.
It's a religious holiday.
It's a shopping holiday.
It's a day for those who shop religiously.
I'm not a big fan of either.
So for me, Christmas is a day to spend with those you hold most dear in your heart. For me, it's Carlos and my family. Of course, the family is mostly on the Left Coast and I'm over here on the right, so Christmas is me and Carlos, and Ozzo, Tuxedo, Max Goldberg, and Consuelo Roca Jones--all our furry kids.
It's a day of relaxation and togetherness; reflection and laughter; of a good dinner cooked and shared by the two of us. It's not a day for What did you get? or for thinking How could I have spent so much? It's a day for How lucky am I?
How lucky indeed.
Christmas is more than a celebration, it's a connection we all can share regardless of faith, if we look at it as a day of Peace. A day to relax; to forgive, if not forget. To be at Peace.
Every year I get the same question from friends and strangers alike: What are you getting for Christmas? What do you want for Christmas?
And I always say, What I get is a lovely day. What I want, and I ask for it every year, is Peace On Earth.
So here's to Peace On Earth, and the little parts that each of us play in creating our own peace. To make amends to those we may have slighted in the past year; to those who may have slighted us. To talk with the people we love just because we love them. To be nice.
Just to be nice. There's a concept.
Maybe if we all took a moment to think about how we'd like to be treated, we would find ourselves treating others the same way. It's a small step, but an important one. A Please here and a Thank You there. You're Welcome is good, too, though My pleasure, is better. Hold a door open for someone; let someone with less packages get in line ahead of you. Lay off the horn. Don't speed. Smile. Be nice.
Be at Peace.
Merry Christmas world.
Happy Hanukkah.
Happy Kwanzaa.
Merry Festivus.
Happy Holidays.
Peace.
And so that's my wish for you and yours. Health. Happiness. Love. Peace.
And, while I've said it over and over again, that I have my personal spiritual beliefs and they do not follow the teachings of any organized religion, every Christmas, no song makes me feel more peaceful, more happy, more at ease, more hopeful than this one. And so I'll end with O Holy Night not because I am a religious man, but because I am a hopeful man, a peaceful man, a contented man, And no one, for me, sings it better than my girl, JHud.....Jennifer Hudson.

The ISBL Asshat of the Week ... But First ...
...a programming note:
Blogging will be sparse the next couple of days. Oh, there
will be some stuff, but, you know tis the season … to be given the gift of the flu
by Carlos.
Yes.He.Did. And in return I have given him the gift of a throat so sore
I cannot speak, though I do have a myriad of hand gestures with which to get my
point across, but I digress.
Hope you all have a lovely holiday, while I’ll be having a lovely
holidaze, and now … The ISBL Asshat of the Week:

Students Protest Firing Of Gay Teacher
Mark
Zmuda was the vice principal at Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish, Washington, just outside of Seattle. I say
‘was’ because Zmuda was terminated for marrying his same-sex partner and in
doing so he is said to have violated
both Catholic teachings and a contract he signed when hired by the school.
This
is not news, really; this has been happening at Catholic schools everywhere,
where gay employees have been fired for getting married or just getting engaged.
But what’s different about this time is the reaction of the student body at
Eastside.
They
walked out of class; and began using social media — Twitter and Facebook — to
air their displeasure at Zmuda’s firing to other Catholic schools in the area,
whose students also walked out of class in solidarity.
But
before we get to that, let’s get to some discrepancies in the story.
Mike
Patterson, an attorney for Eastside Catholic, said the process that led to
Zmuda’s “departure” began about two weeks ago when the school became aware that
he had legally married his partner
over the summer. But was it a departure? Well, Mike Patterson says Zmuda resigned, but a letter sent from the
school to parents says Zmuda was terminated
because he violated his contract.
“He
resigned,” Patterson now says, “I just spoke with him within the last two
hours. He agrees he resigned.”
But,
if he resigned, why did Eastside Catholic president Sister Mary Tracy, who discussed
the issue with Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, say she met with Patterson
and Zmuda in a cordial meeting where it was decided he would leave the school. And then why Tracy report to other school
staff of Zmuda’s termination? That doesn’t sound like resignation, unless they
mean a forced resignation.
“It was just one of those situations where he knew ... that he needed to comport with the [teachings] of the church, and his same-sex marriage was not comporting with that.”—Mike Patterson
Patterson
added that it was Zmuda’s same-sex marriage, not the fact that he is gay, was
the reason he cannot work for the school, but um, yeah, if he wasn’t gay then his
marriage wouldn’t be same-sex, now would it. I love this bassackward logic of
the Catholic Church. It’s not because he’s gay, it’s because he acted in a gay manner
doing something he is legally entitled to do in the state of Washington.
But
enough of that; fired or resigned, Mark Zmuda is out of a job because he got
married, and when Sister Tracy broke the news at a faculty meeting it spread
quickly though the student body. And that’s the good news, for equality, and perhaps
the bad news for the Catholic Church.
Christian
Leider, a Senior, said he found out on Twitter: “The students were pretty upset
about that so we all came together and rebelled against it. Once one person
found out it went on Twitter and then everyone found out.”
He
and others started rounding up students for a sit-in at the school common area and
then they marched up a hill to the main campus to show their support for Zmuda
to the media gathered there.
“We did not know he was gay before today. He’s always looking out for the best in everyone and he always wants everyone to do their best.”—Christian Leider
Sophia
Cerino, a freshman at Eastside Catholic, said most students support marriage equality:
“Just
because I’m Catholic doesn’t mean I need to believe every rule the church has. We
think the rule over gay marriage is totally unfair. Everyone seems to think the
same thing — that we should all be treated equal.”

When
the students were gathered on the street, Zmuda spoke about what happened:
“He
told us he had gotten fired because he is gay and married. He told us to grow
up, get a job and find true love. He was crying and told us what we were doing
meant a lot to him.”
Grow
up, get a job and find true love.
I
think someone should teach the ‘Grow up and find true love’ lesson to the
Catholic Church.
WTF? Katie Couric
The Marriage Equality Train Added Two More Stops
I feel like I blinked and two more states joined the
Marriage Equality team.
Out there in New Mexico it was quite easy because their
state constitution never had any specific wording about male-female only
weddings, and so it seemed that it was legal all along for same sex couples to
wed.
And most of New Mexico went, Meh. Okay. Get married.
But then Utah — U-freaking-tah — where a federal judge ruled
that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, and suddenly
The Gays were lining g up to be married and county clerks were quitting their
jobs so they wouldn’t have to issue licenses to same-sex couples.
And then the wingnuts came out of the woodwork, and by
wingnuts I mean the Republicans, who were trying anything to stop the weddings.
Even the Governor, Gary Herbert filed seeking an Emergency
Motion for Temporary Stay hoping to stop The Gays from being equal. And then just
yesterday, the United States Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit denied his motion.
According to court documents,
the filing for an Emergency Motion for Temporary Stay neither addressed nor
satisfied the factors that must be established to be entitled to a stay pending
an appeal. The denial is without prejudice if the defendants-appellants file a
motion for stay pending appeal that complies with regulations.
So, the marriages are still on, and the wingnuts are still
trying to stop them. It all smacks of California, though, doesn’t it, when
marriage equality was the law and then it wasn’t and then the Supreme Court
said, and I quote, kind of, “Oh yes it is.”
So, out in New Mexico the marriages are on and most folks
are cool with it, while up in Utah the marriages are on, but there are a lot of
folks who have their Bigot Briefs in a bunch. But, like I said, this has happened
before and we’ve seen how that turned out.
Congratulations New Mexico and Utah. Welcome aboard.

PR All-St★rs 3, Ep 8: Garcia and Lacey
Well, since I can’t have The Beautiful Georgina Chapman™ or
The Adorable Zac Posen™ then I will need me some Meana Garcia™. Thank you Lifetime.
Nina Garcia joins Alyssa to tell the remaining
designtestants that five of Stylehauls top bloggers — with a combined following of
6.5 million — will be the inspiration, the newest trend for 2014, and the models
for his challenge. The designers must create a look highlighting what they believe
will be the hot trend for 2014, and must also showcase the 2014 Pantone Color
of the Year: Radiant Orchid, AKA my drag name during my Bangkok years.
The designtestants team up with their chosen bloggers and
this is what we get:
Korto chooses Carli and their trend is the Crisp White Suit
Christopher chooses Fleur and decides to create Military
Lace
Seth Aaron picks Gigi and goes Seamed — not appliquéd — Colorblocking
Elena chooses Dulce and opts for texture
Viktor gets Jarmaine and trends Good Girl Gone Bad — whatever that
means.
So, let’s rip…..
THE BOTTOM FOUR
SETH AARON
His blogger is the
transgender Gigi with ADD so she and Seth Aaron get along like distracted besties.
He goes neoprene — and Elena reminds us that she was going neoprene three years ago — and
then for no discernible reason says his dress is reminiscent of the British
flag.
WHAT I SAID
It’s cool, but colorblocking
is not very much of a new trend, and those weird leather sleeve caps are
distracting.
WHAT THEY SAID
“Gigi is so pumped
about the dress. When they love it, they sell it.”
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Nina says his was the
best use of the color, but that the look — scuba, athletic, colorblocking — has been
done; she also loved that Gigi owned the runway. Isaac said it wasn’t a lasting
image and thought Seth Aaron was capable of much more. Guest judge Francisco
Costa thought it had a ‘good vibe’ but said there was really no trend happening,
while Alyssa gave it a thumbs up for execution.
WHAT HAPPENED
Safe
ELENA
Elena tells Dulce that she is the color queen while dressed
head-to-toe in black-and-white. That made me giggle. But, again, a structured
patchwork coat and black dress. Yawn.
WHAT I SAID
It was a Kewpie doll in
an oversized knotted kitchen rug of a jacket and the whole look makes her seem
shorter than her actual size.
WHAT THEY SAID
“I really love this
look. I think it looks very graphic from far away.”
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Alyssa thought the
peplum was too long for such a tiny model, while guest judge and Project Runway
darling Cristian Siriano liked the texture trend and the color, but also felt
the jacket might have worked better as a softer blazer style. Nina was
impressed by the texture but thought the jacket wore the girl and not the other
way round. Francisco liked the print but wondered about the relevance and, for
once, Isaac was at a loss for words — which cannot be good.
WHAT HAPPENED
Since they want Elena
at The Tents she’s safe.
CHRISTOPHER
He starts off by saying this challenge will be fun and easy,
then calls it very difficult, He starts off saying his trend is Military Lace
but on the runway he calls it New
Vintage Paris Soft Military, or as I called it, WTF? Plus, he was above using
the Radiant Orchid in the look, and instead used it to make an accessory — not the
challenge Christopher.
WHAT I SAID
It’s a hot mess; the
lace seemed bunched up in spots and the fact that the lace was longer than the
undergarment made it seem ill-fitting. Plus, DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON A MULLET DRESS!!!!
WHAT THEY SAID
“It looks superchic. It’s
double-breasted and has functional pockets. She looks important but it looks
like an everyday look.”
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Isaac liked the dress
with Christopher’s newer, longer, nonsensical trend explanation, but finds the
color funny. Cristian says if you’re making a coat dress it should look more
evening—don’t ask me to explain that, I didn’t get it. He did add that there
was too much going on and no woman wants to wear an overdesigned dress. Francisco
liked the lace, while Nina hated the color of the lace:
Nina Garcia: “It looks
like seaweed that has come out of the swamp.”
Christopher [pissy]: “Thank
you.”
Nina Garcia: “That wasn’t
a compliment.”
Christopher: “I didn’t
take it as a compliment.”
Like I said, pissy. But
Nina did say that Christopher has a knack for creating lightness but this look
was bogged down—See what I did there? Nina said ‘swamp’ and I said ‘bog’? I’ll
stop—and Alyssa was annoyed that he used the Radiant Orchid only as an
accessory.
WHAT HAPPENED
Christopher dodged a bullet
because this should have sent him home.
VIKTOR
He wanted to make a motorcycle jacket and a jumpsuit — something
his blogger Jarmaine said she loved — and he did. But then he scrapped it and
made a poodle skirt with holes punched in it to show the Radiant Orchid; and he
kept the white leather motorcycle jacket.
WHAT I SAID
The coat seemed way too
big, like she was wearing her Bad Boyfriend’s coat, and the skirt was way too Laverne and Shirley.
WHAT THEY SAID
“I love the jacket. It
looks amazing and the dress looks fun and flirty and youthful.”
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Nina said the jacket
was now — as in 2013 not 2014 — but she liked the dress and the hand-cut cutouts without
the jacket, which threw off the proportions. Cristian liked the hand-cut laser
cutouts with the orchid beneath, while Isaac said he liked the plainness of the
dress. Francisco called the dress a thruway — or was that a command? — and said he
thought the jacket made it all work. Alyssa said he missed the mark.
WHAT HAPPENED
Viktor and his fan are
sent packing.
THE WINNER
KORTO
Determined from the get-go. A white suit; a crisp white suit
with a vest instead of a jacket. And she stayed true to her design from beginning
to end.
WHAT I SAID
Bam! We have a winner.
WHAT THEY SAID
“My outfit looks
amazing. It’s crisp, white. The peep of orchid is OMG. I want one in every
color.”
WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Alyssa loved it but
hated the shoes, while Isaac said Korto’s look really showcased the Radiant
Orchid by kind of hiding it a bit. Nina absolutely hated the shoes and the
handbag but declared the vest the star of the show; she said it was a definite
trend for 2014. Francisco loved the pant, calling them fresh and fantastic,
while Cristian loved the structured vest’s softness.
WHAT HAPPENED
Korto gets her second
win in a row and will most likely go to The Tents unless a major flub occurs.
MY TAKE
I'm glad that, although they didn't say it, there was a Bottom Four and a Top One, because other than Korto, all those other looks ranged from Meh to How did you EVER get on this show?
Christopher continually pronounces Fleur as “Floor” until the runway so
you know the producers finally corrected him.
Seth Aaron’s glasses make him look like a cartoon dog … with
a bad haircut.
Elena's maniacal giggle whenever she talks to anyone makes her seem cray-cray.
I think Korto may now be the frontrunner, though Elena is
still getting to The Tents; that means Elena, Korto and Christopher. This is a
shame because I’d rather see another Seth Aaron show than a Christopher or
Elena collection.
I love how shorty Alyssa Milano dogs the proportions while wearing
a mini-skirt and ankle boots that shorten her won legs to about four inches.
Pot.Kettle.Get a new stylist.
And what’s this about the new Tim Gunn show, Under The Gunn? I am so ready for that.
What did YOU think?
