Architecture Wednesday: The Old Ballroom

Now this is how you do a ballroom, you know …

This home was once a ballroom in a former Edwardian hotel on Loughborough Road in south-west London before being renovated into an expansive three-bedroom, three-bathroom 1880 square foot apartment.

Originally conceived as a grand hotel for the urban expansion of Lambeth, the building is nestled among grand Victorian and Edwardian villas that were built to accommodate merchants and clerks leaving the smog of the city. It was also a salsa club and an acrobat arena before it was converted into apartments in 2008 all while retaining its original decorative scheme and grandeur.

Situated on the first floor—what we call the second floor in America—the apartment has an amplified sense of volume with soaring ceilings and a number of mezzanine levels, as well as a stuccoed dome that provides a focal point; the dome was recently repainted and wired with atmospheric up-lighting.

The open plan kitchen features a charming outdoor terrace paved with chequerboard flags and catches the south-facing sun. It has plenty of room for a table and chairs as well as pots full of herbs and flowers for the horticulturally inclined.

The main reception area opens up to a double-height space finished in a pastel palette while light floods into the space via expansive sash windows, which have recently undergone a full restoration to improve energy efficiency. A working fireplace provides a central point for the sitting room while the main floor includes an office, a full bathroom and adjoining bedroom currently used as a nursery.

Upstairs, on the left mezzanine, is the primary bedroom suite, with intricate decorative period plasterwork stretching out overhead and along the upper part of the walls. The room also has dual-aspect windows looking over the front and side of the street as well as an en suite bathroom with a large tub edged in Moroccan tiles, a vanity and water closet.

On the opposite side of the upper story is a second bedroom suite, with windows to the front, built-in storage space and a separate en suite.

  6. We'll leave London and it's weather outside and concentrate on the home. I love it. I embrace a repurpose. The windows that let in all the light is wonderful. I love the layout. I can work with it. And the size of the apartment is about twice the size of my condo. But not overwhelming or wasteful. Gives one a little elbow room. I love the terrace to have a coffee or a meal when the weather permits. The intricate details of the ceiling and stairs are exquisite. The yellow color/shade is a little off putting. And this is a guy who once painted the perimeter of his condo is Yukon gold, cranberry whip for an accent wall, and anthem green. I will need to see the yellow in person. May keep it or choose another time period appropriate yellow. Never been a fan of peach. But you know what it's just paint. The ceilings throughout the home is test to lost craftsmanship. Who doesn't love Tiffany Blue-somewhat. The detail. All in all I love it and with a few tweaks here and there I could call it home. Now let let check the tube schedule to get to central London to do a little shopping.

  8. I like this one. Love the blue bathroom. I'd have to tone down some of the yellow, that color triggers me for some reason. I'd need to use a few of Maddie's houseboys for a while and then start them on the housework.

    1. My one quibble other than the yellow is the small outdoor space; other than that, write a check and pack my bags.

  11. I love this. I’d redecorate (immediately) and update the kitchen among other things. But I’d snap this up in a heartbeat.

  15. The bedroom at the top of the spiral stairs of death, is impossibly small, I would eliminate the balcony outside of it and make that room larger. And do something about the stairs, maybe bridge to two upper story sections. I agree with Mitchell about updating the kitchen. There is a broken hip tub in there, that I would replace with a shower. I can't say I love it, but I would try to make it work. I love the bookcases, open look, the light, the details in the plaster.
